George Washington reg. decision class of 2014

Exactly. It’s just a crazy system, and even if GWU is wait-listing some in order to have greater enrollment rate, what makes you assume that’s the reason they wait-listed you? Just because you think your stats are impressive doesn’t mean they do.

General Comments: GW GIVE ME MONEY SO I CAN GO!!!

as one of those “exceptions” i think it really matters that you actually showed interest in the school. i know i wrote a very passionate essay, had an amazing interview, and gw really is one of my top choices, not just a school i applied to as a safety. i think that showed.

if you were that interested in going to gw and not just applying as a safety but were “overqualified” you should have shown that interest. what’s so wrong with a school that actually tries to weed out those that actually want to go rather than admitting those who apply just as a safety?

Just clarifying… I said “if”. I don’t know if that’s the case, but if it is, blah.

school - never visited and interview there. Don’t need FA anyway. Get wait-listed by them is not a big deal.

Buh-bye, then

@VictoriaChen

Well it sounds like you’re just too good for GWU.

And that is why she is bothered not one bit by being waitlisted. Not one bit.

Yeah, I noticed that. No complaining or anything…

accepted from Brooklyn, NY

GWU is a safety school anyway.

Yes, you proved that. Not.

Oh, the irony.

The Natural:

My daughter was accepted and has a 34 ACT score, 2140 SAT, 710 and 780 SAT II’s, National Merit Commended, can’t accurately remember the GPA so I won’t but it’s very good, took 4 AP’s so far with three scores of 5 and one score of 4 and she is taking 4 more AP’s now. Great interview, great EC’s. So, not all high achieving students were waitlisted. I am very sorry that you were though. This whole admissions process is very confusing and frustrating and it often makes no logical sense.

I’d hardly say I was unqualified. Sounds like somebody’s just a little peeved that the admissions committee was unimpressed. I wouldn’t take somebody who acted like a child when faced with disappointment either.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:

 • AP (place score in parenthesis): 5s on World History, US History, English Language
 • Senior Year Course Load: 4 APs, 1 dual credit class each semester
 • Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Finalist

Subjective:

 • Volunteer/Community service: Roughly 100 hours between a variety of places

 • Gender: Male
 • Income Bracket: 120000-140000
 • Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): None

Reflection:

 • Strengths: SAT, Strong interest in school and in major (volunteered for local congressman’s campaign), strong course load
 • Weaknesses: Rank, Extracurriculars
 • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I clearly showed my interest, had overall good numbers, and made it quite apparent that it was my top choice

My son has almost same stats as SAF and was also accepted. He definitely let them know that GW was his number one choice.

My daughter was waitlisted also - anyone who doesn’t think that this has anything to do with their numbers is kidding themselves.
National Merit Finalist - listed GWU as her first choice
2280 SAT / 3/95 UW GPA / 4.6 W
multiple APs - all 4/5 / rest honors classes - great recommendations / ECs inc leadership positions etc.

She really considered this one of her top choices since DC is a big draw for her…not sure how much more love she could have shown them but I would certainly venture that she must have been at the top of their applicant pool.

You just have to ■■■■■ around these boards to see that ALL schools seem to be playing these numbers games - many more kids getting waitlisted at schools they thought were a lock for them – of course if ABC University gets 10,000 applications, admits 3,000 and puts 1,000 on their wait list it looks better for them than if they outright accepted 4,000 kids.

Floridamom, sorry to hear about your daughter, she looks like a strong candidate. I agree with what you say about how strange the process is, every year I look at the admission stats at GW and it is hard to find rhyme nor reason to it. Good luck with her other choices and perhaps the waitlist will work out for her as well if DC is really where she wants to be!

But many people just like your daughter WERE accepted on this board, right? Of course, people who post on these boards are a miniscule fraction of those who actually applied, so I’m sure there were many more admitted “high achievers” who just don’t bother with CC.

GWU does not go strictly by the numbers- they do love applicants who show interest. I don’t believe “listing GW as her first choice” on the GW app is quite enough interest. Look at last year’s thread- the very same thing happened, and similar disgruntled people who used GW as a safety posted a lot of mean-spirited and petulant remarks denigrating kids who were thrilled to have gotten in. I think that stinks.

Lesson to be taken from this: GWU is not a safety just because you have a nice transcript.

For some people with nice stats it is more than a safety, and I agree that they look hard at a lot more than the numbers to try to figure that out. One of the admissions folks said to us that they look at the essay as well, to make sure you are really saying why you want to come to GW, not just why you want to be in DC. So definitely interest plays a pretty big role in their decision.
