George Washington reg. decision class of 2014

“Safety” to me means a school where your stats are in the top 20% of applicant pool and the school admits > 75% of applicants. GW should not be used as a safety school by anyone. It does not meet these criteria. If GW is truly your number one school I highly recommend applying ED I or II. This is what my daughter did 5 years ago. She had top grades and SATs as well as 8 APS and very strong ECs and applied ED to ensure acceptance.

Another thing I think people need to consider is that a “safety” does not mean you have 100% chance of being admitted. It more likely means you have a 75-80% chance of being admitted. The admissions process is unpredictable to say the least.

To those who were waitlisted…you haven’t been rejected, so if you really want to go to GW, make that known to your admissions rep.

When it comes to any university admission, it is really random, regardless of grades.

I was accepted, these are my stats. But honestly, I think anyone who gets in is lucky.

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): Around 2100, high CR, low writing
SAT II (if submitted): I can’t even remember, between 750-650 for US History, Math, and French
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): Around 3.7
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 5% (I think 2 or 3rd in the entire grade)
AP (place score in parenthesis): European History (4), US History (4), Microeconomics (5), Macroeconomics (5), French (3), English Language (4), English Literature (4), Art History (5), US Government (4), Comparative Government (5)
Senior Year Course Load: Both Micro and Macroeconomics, English Literature, Art History, Both US and Comparative Government, IB HL Visual Arts, Philosophy, Pre-pre law class
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Cum Laude Society (Junior year), Excellence in art and excellence in history awarded at graduation, Diana Dearth Award (special school award)
Also took IB exams: French SL (6/7), HL Visual Arts (7/7)

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Model United Nations (Student Officer at Conferences), Fund-raising for Charities Committee (President), Art, Debate, Student Leader (Prefect), Dance, Play the ukulele
Job/Work Experience: None at time of application
Volunteer/Community service: Roughly 400 hours- worked in art classes and a primary school library, went yearly to work with disadvantaged children in Romania, ran charity committee at school, helped organize yearly school fair
Essays: I wrote about my community service work and how it had inspired me to work in international relations,
Teacher Recommendation: Wasn’t allowed to read them but written by two teachers who I have know for a long time and am now friends with
Counselor Rec: My counsellor was also my french teacher for two years and knew me very well
Additional Rec:
Interview: None, I didn’t even realize there were interviews

Other
Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: International Relations
State (if domestic applicant): Not from the US (Applied from the UK but international)
School Type: Small, international school
Ethnicity: White- Swedish
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: < $80,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): None

Reflection
Strengths: My community service, leadership positions, in school grades, I am bilingual and working on learning two more languages
Weaknesses: SATs, essay writing (not my strong suit!), during my gap year I am studying art (which must seem a bit random)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I am international, obviously interested in the subject I applied to, knew a lot about GW
General Comments: I am sorry for people who didn’t get but I think whatever happens, it’s meant to be. Last year I didn’t get into my first choice but I did get into NYU and Chelsea (one the best art school in the UK). I went for the art school, reconsidered my choices and decided that actually I really want to study international relations (something I had been attracted towards during the entire application process). I have also had the opportunity to grow as a person and prepare myself for university (especially knowing what I want from my university and myself during my time there) in a way I couldn’t coming right out of high school. And it brought my to GW!

ACCEPTED

Stats:
SAT: 2400
SAT II: 2200 (Math II, Chem, French)
GPA: 3.99 (weighted)

extra-curriculars: some political stuff, Junior State, nothing v exceptional, cool internship
honors: NHS, departmental stuff

Very happy to be accepted to GW! This process stinks! Waitlisted at UVA and CMC. Rejected flat out at Amherst and Swarthmore.

Congratulations, FBBG, deldem, fluffnut’s son, Arctic and SAF, and thanks for posting those excellent transcripts- you’re helping me prove a point here. Competition for reg decision was very tough this year.

You got a perfect score in the SAT I and were rejected at Amherst and Swarthmore ??? Unbelievable …

What is your major? I would have to think that the intended major must play some role when decisions are made, especially for specific fields like Engineering, Pre-Med, Pharmacy, etc.

But a 2400? and denied? Unreal …

i got accepted, does anyone know when official packets are coming in the mail? i’m still waiting to hear about the honors program.

@rhsenior they should be coming anytime this week depending on where you live.
I also got accepted. Although my stats aren’t as impressive as these others I see, I interview and showed ALOT of interest in my essays and during my interview.

Gpa: 3.1(unweighted)/ 3.9 weighted
SAT: 1760
lots of EC’s including a part time job.

ACCEPTED! And most likely attending. (:

thanks scmohawk, yup very pleased to be accepted at GW and Smith. The only real “safety” I applied to was UMass Amherst, and I did get in, yay!

I never thought of UVA, CMC, or Pomona as safeties, so dont flame me anyone  but I did think I would actually get in to at least one of them rather than waitlisted. And rejections SUCK, but . . .

Still holding out a tiny glimmer of hope for one of the HYPennDB apps but Ive pretty much accepted that this year was just brutal.

GW is awesome and congrats everyone who got in. Dont be discouraged anyone who didnt. I dont think there’s a person on these boards who’s NOT feeling dejected in some way this week. And if there IS someone like that, :-P

Oh and my intended major(s) were Econ and Russian Lit, lol-- no idea if this helped, hurt, or made no difference.

I dont understand either.

p.s. I was deferred ED at Penn.

thats my story!

Waitlisted to GW from Florida -
International Baccalaureate Program
Female, Asian
National Merit Commended
2240 SAT (720/720/800) / 34 ACT / 3.7 UW GPA / 6.1 W
Great Recommendations & EC

Was accepted to Emory University RD; was told by my guidance counselor that these two decisions together were strange…

^^^ The opposite happened to me. Waitlisted at Emory. Accepted at GW.

I got into Emory and GW (but I have no desire to go to Emory…so)

How many people ended up applying/accepted to GW?

I’m not sure how many were accepted, but the GW Hatchet says that 18840 applied.

18840 regular decision. More than 1600 ED1, and 825 ED2.

Hey everyone!
I applied Regular Decision and I still don’t see a decision online. Does anyone else have the same problem? I’m not sure if I should e-mail admissions about it because it says that my decision isn’t available online yet. Today is March 31st, and they said they’d post the decisions online the last week of March, and everyone else I’ve talked to has already heard. Should I just wait until Friday or e-mail admissions now?

You loged onto the Activity Center?

Does it still say your application is under review?

Liveyourlife, definitely call or email them right away. You should have your decision online by now.
