George Washington U Acceptances/Rejections?

While a perusal of the cc acceptance board may show many outstanding students with high SATs and grades getting accepted, the fact remains that Princeton Review statistics show the median SAT scores and grades of attending students at GW are significantly lower than those at schools such as Chicago or Johns Hopkins. Perhaps these high achieving students showed more interest in GW and hence the school thinks that they have a chance of having them enroll. I do know that I have noticed among my family and friends, that among students who have not let GW know of great interest in the school ( hence the suggestion that they are using it as a safety ), high achieving students who are getting admitted to top 10 to 20 rated schools are often waitlisted at GW. My child had a very well rounded and holistic background, i.e. music, debate, foreign languages, etc. was accepted at all top 20 schools to which she applied, was applying to major in international relations (which she is majoring in at Chicago with honors) and was only waitlisted at GW. This is a little suspicious, but who knows.

newenglandparent-you say, "Perhaps these high achieving students showed more interest in GW." Didn't your child show interest in her GW application? I would think that would be a given, otherwise you're just waisting an application. These rejections/waitlists shouldn't be taken so personally or with such bitterness against this or any school. A student can be a terrific, with a well-rounded background, but not fit into a school's requirements for diversity.etc. I notice that some students accepted to GW with lower stats had some unusual backgrounds. One came from Hawaii and had incredible work experience at the management level. Another from California took care of his autistic brother while the parents worked. This is the type of application information that can't be seen by just looking at grades and scores.

I had an interview, visited twice and GW was definitetly my first choice which I made known in my essay. I have 96 average, 30ACT and lots of community service, play flute, etc. I was accepted....

Face it researchmaven - GWU has a bad case of the Tufts Syndrome this year. Hopefully their administration will cure it by next year. Many of those people who were waitlisted deserved almost full merit scholarships to GWU and admission to the honors college, but frankly they were too good that GWU obviously thought [sometimes correctly] that since they were accepted to ivies and what not, they wouldnt choose GWU.

Tufts Syndrome is an awful disease - for ppl who love a school with it, it tells them that they should do bad in school, get lower SATs, do less outside of school, etc. And basically don't devote their full effort in order to get in. Absolutely disgraceful.

the main problem with Tufts Syndrome this year is that GW and other schools that believe these high fliers will be admitted to Ivy-like schools may be sorely mistaken....we had tippy-top amazing kids at our hs waitlisted to all the schools that have already released decisions....Wash U, Duke, Rice, Northwestern and the list goes on......I'm sure GW, Lehigh, etc. did not anticipate those kinds of results when they waitlisted top kids....

With the astronomical numbers applying this year to ALL schools, colleges should have thrown "Tufts Syndrome" out the window ....and applicants should have not assumed that they shouldn't "show the love" to ALL of their schools......

One more thing: alot of this caliber of schools employed "enrollment management" people this year....I wonder if they all hired the same guy....

^^ i agree completely. Its unfortunate. i def. think GW had tufts syndrome this year
