Is GW worth the extra cash for International Relations or History major?
Is American University really treated as a 3rd class citizen in the D.C. internship/political scene (behind GT,GW, even Howard?)

Just curious about which one you guys would attend and why, comments from current students or alumni would be appreciate.

I have good enough stats for GW, does the IR program at GW one of the most selective areas, my SAT scores are 650/740 (M/V) so im above average there and my GPA is a 3.3 so far (mind you im a junior whose only taken the SAT once, has great ECs and an upward trend)

As an area resident, my perception is that GW is much higher thought of. At least in my circle, AU students are perceived as rich kids who couldn't get in anywhere else. AU also has a distressing tendency to hire people to run it who then feather their own nests, leading to their being fired and the cycle beginning again. It does have a spanking new arts building, though, that I drive by all the time, which looks interesting.

Maybe this is unfair or inaccurate --- I offer what I've heard for what it's worth. Check out the schools for yourself, including visits.

It would be harder to take advantage of the city at AU. It is in a residential area and the metro stop for the school is some hike away. At GW you have a metro stop right there and the campus is close to the Kennedy Center and Georgetown.

Thanks for your response; only reason why I might consider AU is that I am from a fairly small school (class of 80) so going to a huge school like George Washington might be a bit of an adjustment. Then again im just north of New York City so its not like I am not use to urban enviroments.

Thanks for your input. I would imagine that GWU is by far the more diverse school too, which may be a posistive factor for me since I am a minority.

My graduating class has 25 people, and I will be going to one of the biggest schools in the country, UT-Austin next year. If you are open to change, it's not that big of a deal.

If you can, try to visit DC. GWU is right downdown. It is reasonably compact, but operating streets run everywhere thru the campus and some of the buildings are existing buildings that were adapted for use by the college. (It is not in a bad part of city. Penn Ave borders it on the N side and it is about 8 blocks from the White House.) AU is officially in DC, but it is a compact self-contained campus in the NW affluent residential area. They probably say that it is on the Metro (subway), but the main campus is at least half a mile away from a subway stop. Good luck either way. I am not saying that one location is better than the other, but they are very different.

yeah i'll be visiting the Baltimore-DC area in May since I have family there anyway and maybe before that in around March so I'll be sure to check GWU and American out.

GWU's new biz building looks nice. Though it's focused on grad schools you might want to check out the Ranking the IR Programs thread listed under Other College Majors. I would not call AU a third class citizen in the areas you cite.
