personal opinion, what do both colleges look for? which one is better? i want to do international relations..and eventually become a doctor helping out in 3rd world countries. thanks!

Georgetown is better handsdown... especially in international relations.

The School of Foreign Service at Georgetown is amazing.

I don't know much about either school, but reputation wise Georgetown blows GW away.

So you're gonna major in international relations and then go to Med-school?

yup! haha
but i wanted to know what they wanted in the applicants and what kind of educational environment it is

pluses and minuses of both schools

GW is really hands on and internship focused. I really liked it when I visited. It's in the middle of the concrete jungle in Washington, a few blocks from the White House. It's less competative than Georgetown.

My sister, though qualified for a more competitive academic environment, goes to GW. Since she chose to go to a less competitive school, she has more time to focus on her social life, internships (AWESOME opportunities; her freshman dorm was like 2-3 blocks from the White House; several of her polisci major friends intern on Capitol Hill, etc), and jobs without having to worry about hard classes. Plus, she got merit aid, whereas Gtown doesn't offer any.

Still, the School of Foreign Service beats GW any day, and it's not like Gtown is situated on the outskirts of DC. It just isn't in the downtown area.

Georgetown is a top top school and GWU is a second tier school, although it's very strong in your major.

GEORGETOWN!!! :p

georgetown is generally considered more prestigious but both schools have a strong focus on international issues. i found the people at gw to be a lot more down to earth and interested in going out and exploring dc, whereas people at georgetown seemed rich and elitist and only interested in shopping at their fancy georgetown shops. granted, there are both kinds of people at both schools.

Georgetown is both a much better school overall and better for international relations (which is George Washington's specialty).

Georgetown is a top-notch school and is much tougher to get into than George Washington, which is a tier II school.

Basically if you don't get into Georgetown but want to study IR in D.C. you'll go to George Washington.

Even though I will be going to George Washington University this fall and hate to have anything negative to say about GW, I must concede that Georgetown is the better of the two. It's much harder to get into Georgetown than GWU.. however, GW accepts 38% of its applicants so GW isn't exactly too easy to get into either. by the way, GW is known as the college of Georgetown rejects.

on another note, GWU is really on the upper end of Tier II colleges. some consider it a Tier I college too.. but on the lower end. basically, it's on the border line between Tier I and Tier II.

Screw GWU! Price = $50 K is pure ridiculous. UMD is much better and ranked better in many of its programs than GWU.

id hesitate to call UMD "much" better but its def better in many programs...GW is really a one-dimensional school but its heavy duty for that dimension. I also find the MBA program to be somewhat underrated.

georgetown by a million

GW students down to earth? Everyone flaunts their Coach bags and Armani loafers everywhere. GW is in an affluent part of DC; I wouldn't contrast its students' preppiness with Georgetown's.

off topic but both schools have great b-ball teams

as theoneo said... I wouldn't say there's really a difference in the student bodies except that GW students might party more... I bet the income level of the students' parents is more or less the same.

... I encountered some GW sorority girls at Union Station one day, with one of them saying she wasn't a "typical GW girl", and another one pointing out the clothes she was wearing easily cost $400+... and they couldn't lift up their bags high enough to put them in the overhead space on the train. I did help them, but how much stuff can they have to bring home, when obviously they have like 7 other pairs of $150 jeans there.

The GW basketball team is grossly overrated. They have a horrible SOS and their RPI is equally terrible. Their conference stinks, and the only truly good team they have played is NC State (who they lost to).

/off-topic response
