Essays:
Why Georgetown Essay: (10/10) Wrote about how I grew up with GU, as my step-dad has worked there for the past 10 years, and how ever since I was a kid I have been looking to GU as a model for the values and characteristics that I should possess. How GU is a part of my life that will always stay with me.
Essay about me: (9/10) Wrote about how pushing hay bales through the alleyways of an Italian Hilltop village, and the way that it allowed me to connect with the locals, has inspired me to devote my life to combatting Xenophobia
Extracurricular: (7/10) Wrote about my love for theatre, and that I love to perform as the comedic relief because it is one of the simplest ways to improve the days of complete strangers
Teacher Recommendation: Both seemed to be solid
Counselor Rec: Also Solid
Interview: Really wonderful, there was always some sort of conversation, really sweet interviewer!
Other: Step-dad is a department chair at GU, and students with family faculty members have much higher chances

General comments: I’ll admit it; I’m pretty disappointed. I know that I still have another shot, but this has unfortunately really stunted my self-confidence in this whole process. I feel a bit as if I’m aiming too high, especially considering my class rank. I know that college admissions can often seem to make no sense, and it stinks that you never really know what a college is looking for. I feel like my class rank was what hurt me, and I don’t know how holistic Georgetown is. Regardless, congrats to those who were accepted, and good luck to those who are still waiting!

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I wish I would have put more time into my essays. I tried to be creative but I didn’t have anyone look over them. I think I had a little too much confidence in myself. I think my SAT’s really hurt me because they aren’t that high. Probably should have gotten a different teacher for my second letter of recommendation.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted to University of Pittsburgh, waiting on UVa
General comments:
I’m really upset because Georgetown is my top school. I wish I would have gotten in, but I knew my SAT’s weren’t good enough. I’m taking my SAT’s again, so I hope to get a higher score. I think I might apply to NYU because I don’t really want to go to Pitt. I keep thinking there was more I could do; just really disappointed.
My son was deferred as well. SAT 1510, ACT 34, top 10% class, 1st chair trumpet player, 4.0 GPA, great recommendations… he’s a bit discouraged as well… Taking 5 AP classes now, took AP calculus as a sophomore… not sure what happened.
@kellogs17 aw theres still more you can do!! submit supplementary materials like an essay retake your SAT or do another subject test or get another rec letter. you still have a chance in RD why not just do everything you possibly can

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): NHS (President), bunch of other honor societies and clubs, 4 years of varsity softball (captain), travel ball, piano composition and playing, lots of volunteer work. I am really invested in lots of things that I love!
Job/Work Experience: Worked at Podiatrist office since summer after freshman year
Volunteer/Community service: Volunteered at SPCA for 2 years, got 50+ hours. Also volunteer at a free clinic, again 50+ hours.
Summer Activities: Travel softball, varsity softball, piano composition.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): I would give them an 8, I think they definitely sounded like me. The one where I detailed why I wanted to major in International Health was very good since I related it back to my medical issues and my work at the free clinic. For my personal statement I wrote about the time no boys would pick me in gym class even though I was super athletic and to prove it to them I pitched (softball) to one of them and nailed him in the place men don’t like to be hit.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): Never read, but two of my favorite teachers that I love very much and know all about my life! I trust that they wrote awesome ones, they think of me very highly.
Teacher Rec #1: Math teacher, I helped start a program for freshmen with her.
Teacher Rec #2: History teacher, got 5s on his AP tests.
Counselor Rec: Generic probably, did mention that I am one of the best students he has ever seen come through the school though.
Additional Rec: Nope
Interview: Very sweet man, however he graduated in the 60s so I knew more about Georgetown than he did! I have had many interviews in my life and have been told that I interview very well.

Beyond happy to get into Georgetown! One of my top choices for sure. Proof that you don’t need to ace tests to get into top schools! Don’t stress yourself out looking at everyone’s impressive stats, everyone has unique strengths and colleges know that!

Senior Year Course Load: College Calculus 2, AP Physics C, Honors Spanish 4, AP Computer Science, AP GP, Honors Anatomy and Physiology
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP scholar with distinction, perfect attendance entire life(xD), local community service award, soccer team won regional section 3 years in a row.
Subjective:
Extracurriculars: High school soccer 4 years(2 years JV captain), NHS 2 years, Chemistry Club (founder/President) 3 years, Spanish Club (Treasurer) 4 years, Community Action Program 4 years, Academic Quiz Team 3 years, recreational basketball, self-teaching Spanish/Italian.
Job/Work Experience: USSF Grade 8 referee, local soccer club employee
Volunteer/Community service: soccer club camp coach, local food distribution, and organize elementary school events.
Summer Activities: money made these fairly low quality compared to most of which I have read, but: I organize summer recreational soccer games in my community, and this summer I spent a lot of time with Spanish, and I have spoken to many native spanish speakers through Skype, etc. to improve my speech/comprehension.
Essays: 7 at worst-10 at best… I have received compliments for my writing, so I don’t think they could have been bad… I guess if I didn’t connect with the admissions officers they would be around a 7/8.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): Counselor: 8/10, she’s new this year, but whenever I showed her my resume and my schedule she seemed impressed with me and I’d assume she sent something decent, I hope.
Spanish Teacher: (9.5/10), She had me for 2 years at the highest level of Spanish offered in my school. I received near perfect grades each year; she loves me.
AP Chem teacher: (9.5/10), She also had me for 2 years; I was one of her favorite students, got straight A’s in her class, and I’m the President of the Chem Club she sponsors, so we are pretty close. I expect she wrote something very good.
Additional Rec: N/A I didn’t know this was an option???
Interview: (8/10), It lasted an hour and I am very personable. I was a little nervous, but it didn’t affect how I performed. Although I was enthusiastic and such, we didn’t have anything noticeable in common. She was a sociology major who grew up rich xD, I am a low-income guy who is majoring in Chemistry/Spanish. She did compliment me on my answer to the question: “What do you offer Georgetown”, though. I guess I didn’t shine enough for a raving advocation xD

Reflection
Strengths: idk. nothing? maybe my LoRs and self-instruction of foreign language…
Weaknesses: standardized testing put me in their median range aka not good enough for EA, subpar interview, poor luck.
Why you think you were deferred: my weaknesses weren’t easily overlooked unfortunately…
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at UPITT, RMU, Calvin College, OSU, and Purdue (These are all safeties)
General comments: IDK, I guess I wasn’t expecting an acceptance today, but it still stings a bit. Georgetown is my #1, I hope that I will be accepted regular decision, but that %10 acceptance rate makes me cringe…
Also I didn’t take the Subject test for spanish because I wanted to wait until the end of the year… I guess it would be smart to take it in January so they can see what I know.
Decision: Accepted
Accepted to Georgetown College FLL program
I want to write this because I want to show everyone stats doesnt define who you are and your chance of getting in. I was sooo anxious (especially after reading all the college confidential). I am not a perfect student at all and many other students here are so much better than me in terms of stats. But I still got in!

Essays (rating 1-10, details): i wrote my georgetown essays a while ago but the night before the deadline I was like these essays were awful so I rewrote all of them. Submitted 10 minutes before they were due. I thought they were pretty good when I submitted, but thinking back now I think they can still be improved.

General comments:
To be honest Georgetown’s offer means a lot to me. All schools I m applying are schools I want to go (princeton, uchi, mit, etc.), so they are pretty much all reach for me. Yes I didnt apply for any safety. So admitted by georgetown means I don’t have to apply to safety schools I don’t really like or I don’t really want to go. It means I might be a better person than I think I m.
My advise to everyone reading this comment: be who you are and be brave. Dont hold yourself back at anytime. Do whatever you think you will do if you weren’t afraid. Dont worry about what everyone else is saying about reach and safety.
(I literally had a fight with one of my best friends at that time about this because he thought i shouldnt do my college application like this. And I stopped talking to him since then since I thought he in fact didn’t know who I really am even though we were that close.)
Aim for the stars, but your goal is behind that.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): 10s. I had vivid imagery, lots of voice, and a lot of people complimented me on them. My passion for the school definitely shone through. I wrote about my exchange for the first, my passion for art in the second, and for the why Gtown one I talked about Jacks crew, their Jesuit ideals, their Walsh Mcdonough joint program, etc.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 7. math teacher found me amusing and I worked hard in his class.
Teacher Rec #2: 10. Japanese teacher had me for all 4 years, was advisor of my club, even once thanked my mom for giving birth to me.
Counselor Rec: 7. It wasn’t anything special.
Additional Rec:
Interview: REALLY GOOD. My interviewer transferred to Georgetown undergrad and went to law school there as well and I told her thing about Georgetown that she didn’t even know. She was impressed by my activities and even said that I seemed like a perfect fit for Georgetown. kinda awkward at the end since I didn’t realize that I was the once who was supposed to leave and awkwardly stayed for a few minutes.

Reflection
I’m very bummed out about this result, and I’m trying not to let it get to me too much. This isn’t a very encouraging start to the college process. I’ll definitely be taking SAT Subject Tests in January and sending in a letter of continued interest to hopefully beef up my application a little more.
Strengths: Weighted GPA, ACT score, essays
Weaknesses: SAT Score, no SAT II tests, Teacher rec #2, essay about activity I’m most involved in, interview (maybe)
Why you think you were deferred: I think it was probably because of a lack of SAT Subject Tests.

Reflection
I am a little discouraged by this and now have shaken up what other schools I will be applying to early. There is the rumor that Georgetown doesn’t accept legacy kids early but who knows (anybody want to confirm or deny)? Hopefully my subject tests will push me over the top (750 math 2, 790 spanish, unknown world)
Strengths: Weighted GPA, SAT Score, Interview
Weaknesses: No subject tests, recommendations
Why you think you were deferred: Might be the legacy thing or it might be the subject test thing or maybe I just wasn’t as good as I thought I was.
