Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Top 10 Winner at DECA ICDC, a science and a leadership award through the University of Rochester awards program

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): DECA Association Officer, DECA Chapter President, NHS President, independent genealogical research
Job/Work Experience: Server at a local restaurant since summer after freshman year (several days a week)
Volunteer/Community service: Peer Mentor for an outreach group with the local middle school
Summer Activities: Teen Assistant at a local community theater company, Counselor for township recreation summer camp (all unpaid volunteering)
Essays (rating 1-10, details):

Personal Essay - Used my Common App Personal Statement about how my genealogy research has helped me feel better connected to American/European history and my religious views (or lack of them). Thought it was very well written and as creative as I could be given my list of fairly un-unique activities

Activities Essay - Elaborated on my experiences in DECA but connected it to being interested in international education policy. Thought I did a good job of not sounding “braggy” at all.

Walsh SFS Supplement - Wrote about taking a “causative approach” to the prevention of genocide, incorporating social psychology and historical examples. Wrote in two hours the day before the deadline and really wasn’t happy with it.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: History teacher who I’ve had for 3/4 years of high school. I indicated International History as my prospective major within SFS so I think she was able to speak to appropriate strengths.
Teacher Rec #2: DECA Advisor who I’ve never had as a teacher. Probably spoke about my leadership skills and how they would translate into taking initiative on campus.
Counselor Rec: She’s helped me apply to lots of different programs in the past and knows how involved I am with DECA and NHS (as many students are referred to me from the guidance department). Knows that I am a very proactive student.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: Went fine, not poorly. I was discouraged because many people describe their interviews as turning into a really fun discussion that lasted hours, but he just asked me four or five questions and then just chatted about the college process. Took place at his office during the workday for about a half hour. I really don’t think it counts that much for the application.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: International History within SFS (but undecided within SFS, in reality)
State (if domestic applicant): New Jersey
Country (if international applicant): N/A
School Type: Medium-sized public high school (1200 students)
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: $100,000+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Jewish (might make a different at a Jesuit school?)

Reflection

Strengths: Part of a selective program in my school where we take a four-year course sequence based around international studies and global business. Flawless transcript. Very strong history scores and a good history teacher recommendation as an International History major. Long-term and very involved extracurriculars (even though they’re not very unique). Good, creative personal essay (in my opinion).
Weaknesses: Only took three years of foreign language, never honors (SFS requires foreign language proficiency by graduation). Transcript was only part of my application indicating any interest in foreign service. Weak SFS-specific essay. Would have liked my two lowest SATII scores to not appear on my application but Georgetown has a very strict score-reporting policy.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted: Who can say? I’m very pleasantly surprised.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted: As of December 20, I’ve been accepted EA to Boston College. Haven’t heard back from anywhere else yet.

General comments
After being denied by Stanford, I had a minor fear that due to applying mainly to top-tier schools, I had left myself very vulnerable and this acceptance gave me a wonderful back-bone and confidence. Wonderful school, if I don’t get accepted anywhere else, I will be quite content.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): My main essay was about a backpacking expedition in New Mexico when I led my patrol for 8 days. We aided a hiker during a hail/rain storm on top of the steepest peak on the mountain range. I also spoke about my overall BSA career and how it shaped who I am (9). My ‘why Georgetown’ essay consisted of my appreciation of Georgetown’s history and programs. I like business, politics, and computer science/research, and D.C./Georgetown is a place where they all mix together. I also love the humanities, and I felt that Georgetown would be the only place where one could study math/compsci while also learning more about philosophy and politics (8).

Teacher Rec #1: AP US History Teacher. I was really close with him and he started my passion for philosophy (specifically Stoicism) (10)

Counselor Rec: Pretty close with my counselor and he wrote a good letter (8).
Additional Rec: Met with a priest who had some weight at Gtown (10).
