georgetown is a great university in a great city

thanks mauritanie!

Has anybody else heard?

wooo hooo africa representin! (im from ghana)

i would think that there would be another wave of acceptances (probably the last). It's the 18th now. After anothter few days, i think it'd be smart to just discard the possibility of getting accepted and look at our other options.

I have a few friends who are competitive applicants who also have not heard yet, and nspeds said that last year he received his acceptance after the 20th I believe, so I wouldn't assume you're rejected just yet.

yep, i'm waiting for that last wave of acceptances.

So I read G'Town is fairley liberal with giving credit, does that mean we can attempt to negotiate for credit if we have somewhat valid grounds?

You bet. I did it last year.

nspeds, what are your thoughts on transfering was it worth it, will you be able to graduate on time (meaning in 4 yours total however many at your first insitution and however many at g'town.)? I am just wondering, I got accepted and I am trying to get orientated this is a big decison.

Worth more than staying at my previous school? Definitely.

Yes. In fact, at my current rate I could graduate a semester early, but I will relax a little:)

Yeah that's what I was thinking but it was good to have it reaffirmed what is your major?

Philosophy...

By the way, Tad Howard, your dean, is an awesome person!

In fact, all the deans I have encountered at Georgetown have been awesome.

In fact, all my professors and the deans I have encountered at Georgetown have been awesome.

That is why I love Georgetown. The faculty and deans are incredible people.

Awsome, how did you find G'Town academics compared to your previous institution, and what was your previous institution?

Georgetown is beyond comparison.
and what was your previous institution?
A small Baptist university in Houston.

As you can see, I do not have a real standard with which to compare Georgetown; however, I can tell you that the academics here are outstanding. I do wish the school were less pre-professional, but that is just personal preference. I have seen courses at Harvard, Princeton, and Rice and while I am not going to say that Georgetown surpasses academically those institutions, I will say that Georgetown is comparable. I know many students here who turned downed HYPS, Brown, Rice, UChicago and such to come here, and most of them do not regret their choice:)

Edit: And in my opinion, when you reach this level, the difference in academics is hair-splitting. Perhaps the actual academics may vary greatly, but what you will get out of it depends on you, and your academic needs will probably not exceed that of what the institution has to offer.

Oh I completely agree there is no way my needs will exceed what the instiution offers. What I meant was were you able to handle the advanced level of academics at G'Town. Essentially did you maintain a good GPA I plan on attending medical school so a steller GPA is a must. And while I am confident in my ablity to get good grades at most institutions I just wanted to know if the transition was difficult, took a lot more work, or was it just that the subject matter and overall quality improved not necessarily difficulty?

I have a pretty good GPA, though I do not wish to publicly disclose my current one. I had to work hard to maintain it. Georgetown is not an easy place.

It was a little difficult, but it is not easy to compare my situation with yours since I suffer from OCD. Any transition is difficult for me :/

Professors definitely have higher expectations of you, at least in the humanities. I should emphasize that many professors care about your thoughts, and not mechanics (unless they happen to impede on the expression of your thoughts).
or was it just that the subject matter and overall quality improved not necessarily difficulty?
The subject matter and overall quality definitely improved. Most of my in-class discussions were great, and the readings were intellectually stimulating.

The biggest difficulty at Georgetown, in my opinion, is in earning an A. We have a little grade inflation, which might carry you to a B+. You have to work for an A-, and you have to pray for an A. Some professors rarely give out As, some professors give out not As, not A-s, but A/A-s (I have already had two such professors)! I am not sure how it will be for you since you are pre-med; however, in the humanities, there are definitely higher standards of thought and expression.
