Georgetown Chances

Hi! I’m a Junior who will likely be applying to Georgetown Early Action for class of 2025. I’d appreciate any prediction of my chances as well as any advice you have that could strengthen my application.

Ap Classes by time of Graduation:

Ap European History
Ap Physics 1
APUSH
Ap Language and Composition
Ap Gov
Ap English Lit
Ap Environmental Science
Ap Stats
Ap Micro

GPA:
Unweighted: 3.91 (Would be a 4.0 but two B+ in math classes)
School doesn’t use a Weighted scale but all classes have been either AP or Honors

Tests:
35 ACT (E:35,R:36,M:33,S:35)
Will be taking SAT subject tests this summer

Extracurricular:

I believe this is my strongest section. I’ve had an interest in politics since a very young age and I believe my extracurricular highlight this effectively.

Summer Intern for State Representative
Public Policy Intern for the Alliance of YMCAs
Intern for the Barbara L’Italien Campaign Congress

Debate Club Founder and President

Volunteer/Intern for Summer Camp Teaching Inner City Kids
MIT Leadership Training Institute
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Youth Advocacy Leader
Volunteer for Elizabeth Warren 2018 Senate Campaign

Model UN Club
Freelance Video Editor ← My Main Job During HS

Teacher Recs:

Probably going to struggle a bit here, I can be quite the distraction during class. I could probably get 2 solid recs from my APSUH teacher and intern supervisor. Guidance Counselor will probably give a mediocre rec.

I’m applying early action likely to major in gov. Please give your thoughts

I think Georgetown is tough and really wants valedictorians, legacies, kids from geographically diverse states, some first generation college kids, etc. if you haven’t already take a look at the Georgetown forum threads and the bios of the kids that were accepted and rejected. Also read the info provided on CC by Ethan McFarlin, the “ask me anything” kid who was accepted to many Ivies and Georgetown. My son had a 4.75 GPA in all AP and honors classes and was rejected by Gtown so good luck!

Your profile seems vaguely similar to mine (current student admitted EA) so I’d say you have a strong change, though with an acceptance rate in the 10-20% range Georgetown shouldn’t be a truly safe bet for almost anyone. At this point I’d just say to do your best on the SAT subject tests and make sure your essays and interview drive home why you want to go to Georgetown specifically, though your interests seem to be a good match for the school and applying EA helps send a signal on that.

Georgetown has been my dream school since seventh grade, but I’m not exactly sure how I would get that across. Other than essays and interviews, is there other ways to demonstrate interest? Do colleges keep track of virtual tours and things like that?

The biggest problem with prestige is that 9 times out of 10 you can’t afford it. Getting in is actually the easy part. The real screening comes in the form of the tuition bill. Keep some good affordable match and safety options available.

State your interest, but otherwise talk about you, not them. They want to get to know who you are. They want to educate the leaders of the future, so can you take your current interests, abilities, accomplishments and personal qualities and project them down the line to show Georgetown who the future you might be? That’s hard to do. Get help from adults who know you. Georgetown wants to know why they should invest in you. Give them a reason.

@futurepr In terms of demonstrating interest, you got it, your essays and interviews are the best way to do that. Tell them what Georgetown would offer you that no other school could, or better than any other could, and then explain how you would take advantage of all of that, which would implicitly show how important the school is to you and how much you would contribute to the campus community. Answering the “Why us” question is hard, trust me I’ve stared at plenty of blank pages trying to write that essay, but when you have the basics down already which it looks like you do I think it’s the best thing to work on.

My son was accepted to Georgetown 's SFS Class of 2024 and he will be attending. Your credentials are very good - however, your recommendations that you expect could hurt you…
Your supplemental essays to G-town appear to be important. So really take time to write them!
