Georgetown Class of 2017 EA/RD Discussion Thread

Yes, I agree about the hook. I suppose the beekeeping thing will get you a second look, as will the chinese singing contest. What did you declare as your major of interest? I think that has a lot to do with it. For instance, I declared International Health as my intended major, and I have done a lot related to international health.

I did not declare a specific major. I discussed the reasons behind this for about a paragraph in my “Why Georgetown” essay, but to sum it up I love learning about people and society but I can’t decide which aspect specifically I want to focus on, and so I did not declare a major. I do want to continue my Chinese studies and I want to stay involved in politics, and and so I’ll be studying something along those lines. Also, I’m not positive if this is exactly a hook, but the Congressman I’ve been working for wrote me an excellent (I’ve told) letter of recommendation, and has offered me a spot in his DC office, which he included.

panicking. my interview was only about 30 minutes, and that was me asking question after question about GU. he didn’t ask many questions about me, but seemed more interested on selling the school. i’m really worried. my “personality” didn’t really shine through, i feel like it didnt have a chance to :frowning: he asked 5 questions tops. nothing on EC’s, reading, politics, or anything of that nature. not even “why georgetown?” just general interests

@Schooling - the Congressman is most definitely a hook. It shows that you would serve a purpose in DC. And you have fantastic SAT scores. Personally, I think you will get in.

@schooling-- I think you have a good shot  Your SAT score is outstanding and your extracurriculars truly show that you have an interest in politics and Washington DC. (Isn’t that what Georgetown is all about?!? :)…I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you and let us know the outcome when the big day arrives! :)

O. I’m sorry for the awkward silence as well JuniorMint - I’ve got way more work than day:p But yeah, I’m kinda thinking the same thing as well now. It was my first application, and I feel like I didn’t put as much energy into my essay as I should have …. But, que sera sera. At least I know I’ve got to work harder on my other apps now  I’m sure you should be fine – your stats aren’t “slightly” competitive. Considering Gtown doesn’t look at writing, that’s an almost perfect score! (literallyXD) I wouldn’t be too worried:)
Ack! Fingers crossed for the both of us then! I’m still undecided about my RD … I was considering Cornell but I don’t know it as much as I’d like to. Then I was thinking Brown, because Brown is perfect.
Gahhh so many decisions…
So many applications -_-

And @schooling, your chances seem solid, like a couple of people on this thread have mentioned. You do, however, need to have a hook - and I think in your case, a killer essay could be your “hook” of sorts. What were your essays on? Did you seem passionate? Because more than most schools do, gtown loves students that love gtown. The application is hard to finish so this weeds out applicants who “just want to give the school a shot” but you’ve got to go beyond that and show them that you’re the right fit for the school.
And this is all information I got from an admissions rep:P

i have a 3.7 gpa at a highly competitive private school and a 1330(690 math and 640 cr). what are my chances of getting in EA and should i apply to the college or the business school for a better chance?

Yal3Girl. Brown is the Happy Ivy; I <3 grade inflation. Cornell is the sad Ivy, but I like it just as much. I am curious though, do you like the Northeastern campus? (I haven’t visited.)

vos153, has the EA deadline passed? I would apply RD, especially if you can bring your GPA up slightly. (Not that it is low.) EA is more competitive for the unhooked applicants like you and me.

It passed but I live in NYC and was affected by the hurricane so I emailed and they said I can still apply, and I was thinking that if I apply ea and get deferred I could still apply rd and it would show interest (so really nothing to lose), what do you think? And should I apply to the college or the business school(I’m not really sure what my major would be yet) for a better chance to get in?

Hmm…if you have already completed the application, then I would submit it. From what I remember, the College acceptance rate was 15.8 and McDonough was 16.8%. The EA acceptance rate is lower than in RD.

29 days people

I have a 4.0 GPA unweighted at a very competitive public school and SAT scores of CR 710 and M 740. I have a ton of extracurriculars (horseback riding, work 8-15 hours, german lessons, teaching religious school, volunteering, NHS officer) but I think my essays were only ok and I don’t really have any interesting hooks. I applied EA to the SFS. What are my chances of getting in do you think? Thank you!

Your scores and your GPA put you on the map. However, your extracurricular activities are nothing special. Have you shown any interest in international relations/policy?

I have an internship with an international nonprofit and I did an academic program in france on french and international relations 2 summers ago.

Well that’s good! I interned at an NGO over the summer. What did you write your SFS essay about? I think that is a major component of the application.

do we get some kind of confirmation that our application is complete? my other early schools have online portals that you can check on the status of your application but I haven’t received anything like that from Georgetown

No, we do not. Apparently Georgetown will contact you if anything is missing.

has anyone been notified early? I also applied to fordham ea, and already got a decision even though they said they would notify dec 15 like georgetown

How are people notified?

I believe we’ll get our decisions via snail mail… not fun! Haha
