I was admitted into the SFS; however, I’ve really liked Computer Science this year and am considering pursuing that as a potential career option. So two questions. How much programming will I be able to do in STIA? I’m sure that there is a strong policy focus in the STIA major, but I’m much more interested in programming, so I wonder how that will be impacted. Second, if I were to transfer into the CS department in the College, what’s the quality of that department? I know it’s small, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but is it comprehensive and practical, or does it deal mainly with theory?
You can do quite a bit of programming in STIA, I know a few CS heavy people in the STIA major and they are all doing very well for themselves. The CS program at Gtown is small but good, and I believe focused on practical aspects, although I’m not sure how much theory there is in CS. The professor in charge, Lisa Singh, can singlehandedly help you get jobs at top tech firms, although if you are STIA and focusing on CS, you will meet with her quite often anyway
If you decide to transfer into the College and major in CS, you also have the option of minoring in STIA: https://college.georgetown.edu/academics/majors-minors-and-certificates/stia
