Reflection
My GPA was dragged down by some family difficulties during my freshman year but other than that I think my application was decent. I wished I spent more time on my supplements since it was much weaker than the main essay.

Strengths: Good SAT, First Gen, Leadership in DECA and having the club advisor to attest to both my academic skills and leadership skills in DECA

Weaknesses: Below average GPA, weaker supplement, extracurricular did not reflect my interest in healthcare very well

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
I think my SAT scores, main essay and teacher recommendations were pretty good. I conveyed to my interviewer that GU was my top choice

Decision: Accepted

Essays (rating 1-10, details):

Special Talents/Skills: 9/10- Wrote about how my talent is asking questions and how it’s helped me in school/life. It’s pretty creative and it is very candid.

Significant Activity: 8/10- Wrote about giving a lesson to a kid who almost drowned days before. I spoke about how it’s my responsibility as a leader and a good swimmer to help kids stay safe. Pretty good, but I could’ve spent some more time on it

General Essay: 9.5/10- Wrote about the TV show “Survivor” and how it’s a metaphor for life, specifically my life. It’s very creative and demonstrates my writing abilities

Why Georgetown/Education Essay: 9.5/10- Best essay I wrote. Talked about how involvement, specifically in elections, is really important and provided an anecdote to support it. Then I talked about Georgetown and citied specific classes/professors/clubs. I ended with a powerful conclusion that gave my counselor goosebumps.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: AP Micro/Macro and Advisor: 9/10: She knows me well and loves me. Her son also swims competitively, so we bond over that. She’s an Econ teacher so her writing might not be the best, but I know she wrote some powerful stuff.

Teacher Rec #2: APUSH Teacher: 8.5/10: We are friendly and talk a lot (especially during lunch), but he’s a really popular guy so he has to write around 60-70 letters. He can write really well, but I don’t know how personalized the letter will be.

Counselor Rec: 8.5/10: She went on maternity leave in September so she only has known me for 5ish months. However, we developed a tight bond, but it could’ve been better if we interacted more in September and October.

Additional Rec: 9/10: Can’t really say who it’s from, but it’s from an individual who has watched me grow up and is fond of me. She works in the government which will really help me, considering my major kinda related to government.

Interview: 10/10: Turns out her kids went to the same middle school that I did, so we instantly bonded off of that. She was very impressed by my resume, classes, and ambitions and was very eager to write her letter to Georgetown. Quite possibly the best interview I’ve ever done

IB (place score in parenthesis): My school doesn’t offer any
Senior Year Course Load: 4 APs, Band, Physics, Politics and Debate class.

Subjective

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):

–Track (2 year varsity. Senior Captain),
–Chinese School volunteering (TA for teachers, helped teach English to elders),
–Jazz Band (Lead alto Sax ),
–Pit Orchestra (Lead alto Sax ),

Job/Work Experience: Worked at Wendy’s over the Summer
Volunteer/Community service: Key Club, Chinese School volunteering, Habitat for Humanity, Junior Achievement. Racked up around 200 hours.
Summer Activities: Worked, Went to China to chill, Hung out with friends.
Essays (rating 1-10, details):

Essay #1 (Skills Essay): 7/10, didn’t write anything special. Said I wrote a few country songs. Also said that while working at Wendy’s, I would predict (usually correctly) the size drink they would order just from the sound of their voice.
Essay #2 (Activities Essay): 6/10, wrote about working at Wendy’s and how I worked alongside a juvenile delinquent my age and illegal immigrants. I never would’ve met these people before but it was a great experience working side by side and being equals.
Essay #3 (Personal Essay): 10/10, wrote about my LOVEEEE for country music and how I got into it. Wrote about what it symbolizes in my life and how it’s odd because I’m an Asian boy from New Jersey
Essay #4 (Georgetown College): wrote about the jobs I used to dream of at different stages of my life: Middle school teacher, Politician, President, Lawyer. Said how all these focus around helping and serving others. Also wrote about how Georgetown was a place for dedication to community service and told a nice story about my experience there while eating lunch on my campus visit,

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 8/10. written by my economics teacher during junior year. She liked me because I did good in her class but also because I was talkative and we always joked around. We had more of a friend relationship than a teacher-student relationship.
Teacher Rec #2: 6/10. written by my 10th-grade History teacher, who was later my 12th-grade debate teacher. He was impressed with my debating and public speaking skills, but knew me less personally than my previous teacher.
Counselor Rec: 5/10. Very average. She didn’t really know me at all. The only time we talked was when the whole grade hated a teacher and was dropping her class, and so I was the one who went to talk to my counselor about why everyone hates the teacher.
Interview: Went amazing; could not have asked for it to go any better. She said she wanted me to get into Georgetown really badly. Said she would’ve accepted me on the spot if she was my admissions officer.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Political Economics
State (if domestic applicant): NJ
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: public high school. 1100 kids

Reflection

Strengths: I like to think I’m unique. I consider myself pretty popular at school and I am very outgoing. Not a cookie-cutter Asian. I have a very balanced academic and social life. My country music essay probably made me stand out, and my SAT scores were great, but my interview was probably my biggest asset
Weaknesses: Average run-of-the-mill activities. Basically no real leadership positions. Nothing impressive with my extracurriculars.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was a unique person who offered diverse interests and viewpoints. Also strong academically.

Daughter: Deferred

7 AP subj tests (four 5s, three 4s)
good EC & essays, but nothing outstanding at the state/national level
Asian-Fem, State: NC
Weakness: just outside top-10% in large public school

Hello! DS is confused on whether or not we can send AP scores to Georgetown for consideration for RD. Everything is in but Subject Tests were not great (ACT is 35). Can someone tell me how to submit them if we can send them? He is “checked out” after finishing all these apps. Thank you in advance! Good luck to everyone applying.

Hi!, I’m planning to apply to Georgetown this fall (SFS). Does anyone have any advice?

@yagirl932 I would try to get high scores on your AP exams. I think they look at those, and they may get you out of subject tests as well.

Has anyone else’s line for mid-year grades disappeared?

Deferred early with 1590 SAT, 4.0 GPA unweighted, and 11 APs. Just goes to show they’re looking for more than stats. Was hoping my application would perform stronger but sadly it was not in the cards early action. Wishing best of luck to everyone who was deferred EA & RD applicants!
