Hi. I am seeking all your help. Georgetown has been my #1 dream school since I can remember, and as it’s getting closer I need to hear your opinions.
Ethnicity: Hispanic
GPA: Unweighted 96.7, weighted over 100 (haven’t received from my guidance counselor)
SAT: First attempt, 1340, math 720 and reading 620. I am retaking it and studying so much to get my reading score well into the 700s, as my writing score was way higher than my reading.
-Founder of a club at my school (club that helps students in my school “destress”, anti-anxiety activates and awareness)
-VP of club at my school (club based to help support a town in Uganda)
- National Honor Society member
- Math Honor Society
- Spanish honor society
- Member of Athletes Helping Athletes, a club that I visit elementary schools monthly to mentor younger kids into making the right decisions and helping them prepare for middle school
- 4 year varsity swimming member
- Work at a gift store, which I actually have learned more about life than anything I’ve learned about in school.
- Certified lifeguard
- Have been putting a production together for 4 years of high school with the CORE program in my school, making dances and helping disabled students with their lines as well as costumes.
- Been a member of best buddies and have had a peer buddy, who I have came Close with and formed a bond with.
Strengths: My essays that I have written so far are very strong and compelling, coming from my guidance counselor and my sister. I’ve been working on my essays lately to try and perfect them for my application. My GPA is up to standards, being over 100.
My fingers are crossed for my May SAT, to bring my composite score up to where to has to be. I will be taking 3 SAT subject tests, Math II, Physics, and literature.
Weaknesses: My ECs, I know, are average. I am involved in what I do, and love everything that I do in school. I know they aren’t the best, and this can hurt my application, but I believe that my strong essays and recommendations as well as GPA can even it out.
I did not mention my class rigor.
I am a full IB student taking as follows:
IB physics, Math SL, history, English, business, Spanish. I have taken foreign language all four years
Here’s the thing: there is no bump for EA at Georgetown. They are explicit about that, and they mean it. The students who are accepted EA to Georgetown are either recruits or applicants that Georgetown really wants. The acceptance rate is set by the overall acceptance rate from the previous year, so will be about 16% this year.
Go ahead and apply EA- just don’t take it to heart if you are deferred.
The EA admissions rate this year was lower than the RD rate according to an info session I attended.
I’m not really focusing on EA I was just assuming to apply early. I’m asking more about my chances on getting into the school. Thanks @wisteria100 @collegemom3717
The EA admission rate is always lower than RD. As for your chances, it’s hard to evaluate without knowing which school within Georgetown you want to apply to. Just from looking at your ECs, I can’t really tell what your interests are, and Georgetown likes to see people who are passionate about something and can clearly explain why Georgetown is the best fit for them. What are you looking to major in?
@masquerade98 I understand but I also haven’t gone into full depth about my ECs and you haven’t read my essays. I’m applying to the business school and am looking to major in finance.
@alliegallego It is great that you are starting to think about your applications for next year. You said you are working on improving the reading SAT score which would be great. Are you planning to take subject matter SATs? GU indicates that they prefer them, although my son was admitted without them. (But he did the AP curriculum, not IB and I’m not sure if the AP exams compensated for the lack of SAT Subject Tests). You have a strong passion for the school, and that will certainly help. Have you been able to get to the school for a visit? Other than getting the tests out of the way, your focus will be (for all schools) taking what you have done and packaging it up in your application so that your accomplishments and interests are clear. Take the time to work on your essays. If you need more time, or you think that your senior year grades will strengthen your application package, apply RD. Make sure to maintain a rigorous course load senior year, and take advantage of the alumni interview if you are offered the opportunity. It’s impossible to predict admissions, so make sure to have a wide net in terms of where you apply. Best of luck. Enjoy your summer and last year of high school.
@VAMom23 Thanks! Yes. I am planning on taking 3 SAT Subject tests this June. I am visiting the school in May. I have started my essays, and supplemental essays so I hope that I can have them ready in time to submit to show Georgetown my increased interest. I believe I will get an alumni interview since everyone from my town who has applied there has gotten one. I am continuing to take rigorous courses next year, in addition to a computer science course. Thanks so much! I will keep you updated and continue to ask many questions.
@alliegallego Sounds like you are on track for checking off the application boxes. My best advice from here on out is to make sure you cast a wide net in the application process. The number of applicants qualified to attend any of the top schools far, far exceeds the number of available slots. So, make sure that you have safety and target schools that you love as much as Georgetown on the list. And do some realistic thinking about what you can afford. . Best of luck.
