@PupperthePupcake congrats! That’s so awesome
@PupperthePupcake can we get stats?
Thanks! So an early review will lead to a early notification (earlier than Jun 1st)?
@JGLASS18 @WhoTouchedMyTaco @Robinyoursoul Thank you so much everyone!
@JGLASS18 I am from the Bay Area in California but I go to school at Emory in Atlanta, GA. My intended major is Biology of Global Health. I applied to Georgetown College.
@Robinyoursoul Here are my stats to help you gauge what they’re looking for:
Current School: Emory University
Appplying as a Sophomore Transfer
Major: Biology in Global Health, minor in Chinese language
College GPA: 4.00 (just first semester, mainly Biology, Chemistry, and Chinese Language courses)
College Extra-curriculars:
- Phi Delta Epsilon (Pre-med fraternity) Founding Colony Exec. Board: Secretary and Risk Manangement Officer
- Vice President of Publicity of Emory Chinese Undergraduate Students Organization
- Police Cadet at Emory Police Department
- Hospitality Ministry Team at the Journey Church of Atlanta
High School GPA: 4.00, valedictorian (not as special as other schools because our school did not do class rank. We had 30+ valedictorians because the only requirement was an unweighted 4.0)
SAT: 2190 (1470 without writing) (assuming Georgetown super-scores)
APs: 5 (3 5’s and 2 4’s)
High School Extra-curriculars (off the top of my head, I think I put more on my app):
-Student government: Inter-district council representative and Executive Board Officer
-Intern for California State Assemblymember Evan Low
-Varsity Cross Country
-Worked part-time as a tutor at a learning center
Recommendations: My Chinese 101 teacher wrote my letter of recommendation. We discussed a lot over a span of a month about transferring and she helped me to decide if I should. I feel that she really she supported my decision because it made logical sense to her. She’s a senior Chinese professor at Emory and she also has a PhD in linguistics (no wonder she could explain Chinese so well!). I believe her recommendation had a lot of weight to it because she was recommending a student to learn Chinese at a different school than the one she teaches at.
Essays: I focused on academic fit and what Georgetown offers in majors, language learning, and Jesuit education over what Emory offers.
Interview: She actually goes to Emory! She’s here for a masters in public health and she graduate from Georgetown with the same major I applied for. She said my reasons for transferring to Georgetown made academic sense and she found Georgetown as a better fit for me than Emory.
Pro’s:
-Recommendation letter
-College GPA
-Demonstrated interest in Chinese Language and Pre-Health
-Good Interview
Con’s:
-No research experience @@ (How do people on College Confidential get so much research experience in freshman year?)
-Extra-curriculars are not so impressive
-First semester was a little lighter on credits than my second semester; GPA may seem a little overinflated BUT LOL Emory is not easy fam DX, especially taking bio and chem together with labs T__T
-Didn’t visit Georgetown
-Mediocre High School career
Mediocre high school career?! Get outta here.
It’s quite impressive! @PupperthePupcake
If you wanna talk about mediocre, ask me about my high school career. In my defense, that was close to ten years ago! lol
Guys it is all about grades. No matter if you have EC or good interview or even strong recommendation. If you have a strong GPA, you will get in, if you do not, you will not get in. It is very simple
Thanks and congrats for admitted
I will hopefully have a 3.94 GPA by the time I apply. Do you think I will have a chance?
Guys I have a question and this is a serious one. So I am forming an Economics and Finance Club at my college. Do you guys think I should put founder and president, or just president on my application. I am applying next year. Which one should I put? It might seem like a dumb question, but seriously, I don’t want them to think that I just threw up a club.
@IvyLeague2 if I remember correctly, Gtown doesn’t give you the option to insert specific activities with descriptions. You simply check off a bunch of boxes that most closely resembles the activities that you are involved in. For example, if you’re an exec in a club, you’ll check off the box that is most similar (e.g. “club executive” instead of VP of XYZ). It’s kind of awful honestly. I ended up devoting my essays to my most important activities for this reason.
If you’re applying to other schools via the Common App, I think you should put founder and president.
I put founder and president
**resemble
@WhoTouchedMyTaco @Robinyoursoul aww thanks guys. Good luck to you both. I hope you guys get in
@mb-side Thank you!
@Ivyleague2 I would put both because I helped found a pre-medical fraternity but I was a secretary/risk management officer. Our President definitely had more responsibilities in founding our chapter and I think putting both would capture the responsibilities you undertook. I also agree with @lexluther96 that Gtown doesn’t really give you much space to describe your activities. If the club was really important to you in your college career you should highlight it in your essay.
Help please with my last question @skieurope
Do you know what the options were other than executive? So is like secretary an executive? Or are there other titles and what are they @lexluther96
Hey has anyone not done an interview? I called the person who I was assigned to and they didn’t answer for a few weeks. I am planning on calling Georgetown to check with them about it.
Does Georgetown ask for high school extracurriculars?
When did you submit your app? @PupperthePupcake
Did you not fill out the application or something…?
I am transferring next year hopefully. Applying this fall @WhoTouchedMyTaco
