Okay so Georgetown claims that they pay 100% of the amount of financial aid needed. I just want to know from actual students going there that received financial aid, was Georgetown generous in their financial aid? Please reply, financial aid is a big factor for me in deciding which colleges to apply to!

Yes. Ds is in the Georgetown Scholarship Program, and the school was surprisingly generous. That said, I have a friend whose ds did not get enough to attend, they felt. I don’t know specific numbers, but this is a family of lawyers so I don’t know what they were expecting.

There’s a tool on the website called a “net price calculator”. Enter your family’s information (use a user name to save it on the collegeboard site and check out how much different schools would expect you to take in loans, how much in scholarships, what total your family and yourself would have to pay) and you’ll have an estimation.

Obviously, this is just an estimation, you’d have to actually apply for aid in order to receive anything. But unless your parents are divorced or own a small business, the NPCs are pretty reliable.

My take on Georgetown is that they aren’t very generous with financial aid nor do they give out a lot of merit scholarships. Maybe I received bad information, but I thought that all of the more selective Catholic schools (Notre Dame, BC, Villanova) were similar that way and don’t give away much money unless your family really fits the FAFSA and CSS Profile formula, meaning not much for the middle class. I hope I’m wrong.

When they say they meet need, they do not mean merit aid. As suggested in #2, run the NPC. It should be pretty accurate. They are going to ask for your parents income and net value of investments. Typically they won’t ask how much the house is worth. If you don’t know, guess. If your parents have great jobs then you won’t get much.

Harvard claims that 90% of families in America can send their children there for the same price as going to a state university. Maybe Georgetown is similar. One can hope, eh?

My son is also in the Georgetown Scholarship Program. They met full need–we pay pretty much what the NPC showed us! As far as I know Georgetown does not give any merit aid. It is all need based. They have a fantastic alumni base that donates to the scholarship fund.
Some of the other kids in the Georgetown Scholarship Program receive much more than he does. They also help with any other kind of needs the kids have!
His aid package was good with his acceptance letter, but improved once he enrolled.

My D is a junior at Georgetown. At the time when she decided among the schools, she received about the same amount of financial aid from Georgetown as from Wellesley, and Wellesley is known to be generous with its financial aid. We are happy with the aid my D received from Georgetown.

Our S is a senior this year and his aid has been excellent. This year his out of pocket is the lowest as D is also in college. She is a freshman at Villanova where her merit aid, grant aid, and base federal student loan ($5,500) is covering about 70% of her total COA. So far for S, his cost of attendance is less than we would have paid for any of our state schools.
