Georgetown: I couldn't have said it better, myself.

Hello,

I did not do well in high school, I had a 3.3 gpa. Really low I know, I got accepted into a lot of colleges and universities but turned them do to timing and deposit pay; I plan on working hard and after two years at the school I attend now in northern virginia, transfer to Georgetown. I hope this goal is attainable, but I guess I just have to wait and see when I apply.

This is a just a sample of what I am doing now, I just want a shot. In your opinion will I be given one?

Your ability to transfer to a selective college is going to depend first on your academics, then on your ECs, so it’s much too early to make any predictions.

Focus on your college gpa, but it is very positive to be an active and prominent member of your college community.

Another thing that I must ask is; if I should transfer or not. If I go to a school with a less than intellectual omnipresence, will I be in a better place to apply for Law Schools in this case Yale or Harvard? Or should I transfer and challenge myself to do better, and apply to a lesser Law School because I won’t have the same academic advantage?

^See the Law School forum (read threads before asking as I’m sure this is a FAQ).

Yeah, law school is way beyond the horizon for right now, what I really want to focus on is getting in to Georgetown. I want to get in with all of my being, from the depths of my soul. I know I can do well if only given the opportunity. I just need a shot.

One of my girlfriends at Georgetown was a transfer from NoVa CC, so it is definitely doable.

As you have been advised, keep your grades stellar and participate actively.

To that advice, I will add: don’t put all your eggs in the Georgetown basket. At the vast majority of selective universities, transfer admissions are even more selective than regular admissions. So if you are interested in transferring to a selective school you will ideally want to have multiple options to apply to. (Georgetown actually does better than many in this regard, with transfers at about the same ~15% rate as regular admissions, but that is still a highly selective rate.)

Also, consider putting a small, rigorous liberal arts college with generous acceptance rates on your list as a safety. Marlboro would be a great example - high admissions rate, but an exceptionally demanding curriculum and a strong emphasis on clear post-graduate-level writing (which can only help you later on for the LSAT and in law school itself). New College of Florida is another. These tiny LACs with their required senior theses have a stellar track record of sending students on to top graduate programs of all kinds.

I mean I go to a four-year in northern Virginia, I just really want to challenge myself intellectually- thus the reason I want to transfer.

I didn’t mean to imply that you are specifically at NoVa CC, only to provide an example of the ability to gain transfer access from a less prominent school in the region.

Your desire to challenge yourself will speak very well for you - make sure to mention it prominently in your application.

Let’s hope so, it is my goal. It gives me breath, when ever I find myself becoming lazy or tired, I look at my quote “You Want Georgetown Go Get It!” and it renews my spirit, my passion. I really want to be a PROUD Georgetown University student.
