georgetown in the summer

I recently applied for a summer program in Georgetown (JSA), and even though I have absolutely no idea yet as to whether or not I will get to go, I am just curious about what the campus is like in the summer. Are there a lot of students still on campus? Is the town still busy? Thanks everyone and wish me luck with the program!

I went to Gtown this past summer for a summer program for HS juniors. The campus is very different from the semester, where all students are there.
There are fewer people, fewer services, and shorter hours for everything. Also, it is full of HS students so you wont be able to experience the real "college feeling".
In everything else, DC is a great city in the summer. A lot of tourists, though. There are many things to do and the weather is not that hot. You'll have an awesome time but you must still visit gtown during the semester to really see Gtown.

That's a very good point, although there will be some Gtowm students here the atmosphere of campus is very different.

I went to the Summer College for High School Juniors two summers ago. It's really more relaxed, and obviously not as many students are on campus. You won't have any actual campus organization activities available, except for whatever is part of your program. The actual area of Georgetown is still busy however, as many people from the surrounding areas shop, eat., etc. in Georgetown. So it'll still be active. I guess it'll be good for you to be able to use the facilities without the normal student population around.

I am also going to JSA this summer at Georgetown- which session are you going and what are you studying? (That is, if you have decided to go... )

I'm not sure if I can go yet. I am also going to summer school at my high school and interning in the mayor's office, so I didn't think I could go. BUT I could still go to Session II and Georgetown. When I found out I flipped out because..well it was exciting news. So I wrote my essay that day, got my teacher to write a rec and I mailed it all off on Friday. I know its really late, so I'm not expecting to get it, because they have probably already filled up all the spaces, but I figured, why not apply? How long after you applied did you find out? And how did you find out (mail, e-mail, phone call)? Thanks and HOPEFULLY, I'll see you in Georgetown this summer (unless you are going to Session 1, in which case, HAVE FUN!!)

yeah, i'm georgetown 2, too. I also had a hard decision this summer, but it all worked out (and am also doing Girls State). I applied really early, but they sent me my admission letter in the email about two weeks later I think. hope to see you there!

In case anyone was wondering (well I know you weren't but I want to share!) I got into the summer program. I just found out today. Is anyone else going to JSA Georgetown Summer School, Session II? Let me know, and I'll see you there!

I will be there second session. what are you taking? have you decided on the debate topic yet?

Hey,
I'll be there for the summer (I'm a rising junior). It's pretty active still, but there's a lot of 'visiting students' and it's mostly upperclassmen. See you then, baby.

My top ten choices were
10 fully-funded universal health care system be established in the US (aff)
9 physician assisted suicide be legalized (aff)
8 marijuana be legalized by the federal government (aff)
7 the display of the 10 Commandments on public grounds is unconstitutional (aff)
6 the "Under God" be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance (aff)
5 smoking be banned in business establishments in the US (aff)
4 stem cell research be banned in the US (neg)
3 abortion be banned for teens without parental consent (neg)
2 the consitution be amended to prohibit same-gender marriages (neg)
1 capital punishment be abolished by the states and federal government (aff)

what were your top ten?

Yeah, those are pretty much the same positions and issues I took... very cool. Are you an experienced (etc...) debater?

eh...not as much as some, for sure...but more than others...you?

Mostly Mock Trial (actually, alot with Mt), and some experience with Speech Debate... but I am not sure how they qualify "most experienced"...

anybody attending the International Relations Summer Program??? (july 17 - july 24)

Hey, I'm going to the Georgetown Summer Program as well, Second Session (obviously, since otherwise I'd already be there =oP). I turned all my things in ridiculously late as well, and still managed to get an acceptance. Not sure if that's a good thing or what.

I'm taking Macroeconomics and International Relations, because I'm a boring political nerd. I'm kinda confused as to what all's happening at this point, if anyone has a clue as to general procedures for the program; things baffle me without much effort

Yeah, I too am a bit confused as to how everything works. Such as, can we leave campus on Sundays, and go into Georgetown (shopping!!), it says we need ID, but i dont have a drivers license yet, so should i get an under-18 ID card, because i dont want to carry around my passport, or is my high school student ID sufficient, ...and i had some more but i cant remember them now. i will come back with more later, and hopefully someone has answers.

bump.......

i did the IR program last summer. everything was pretty laid back, if there wasnt something scheduled it was very easy to leave campus... shopping on M street was key. i had my license at that point, but i dont remember needing it, so my guess is a hs student id would be fine.
