Georgetown Interview

I have my Georgetown interview on Tuesday and had a couple question on what to expect and how to dress. I’ve heard that more formal dress is preferred over casual (better to be overdressed than underdressed) but I am unsure what that would mean for a female? I do not have any nice dress pants, I do have some nicer blouses, couple dresses (above the knee black), and some blazers and skirts I wear during debate, but I’m not sure if that would be overdressing? Also, for why Georgetown? All I can think about is that I really liked the atmosphere and the surrounding DC area during my visit this summer, but I feel like that is a very basic response. Also, I’m planning on majoring in Biology and going onto pre-med, so I could talk about how I want to learn how to treat the whole person, but I feel like that is also a common response. I go to a Catholic School, but I am not religious at all. However during my visit I truly did not feel smothered by the religious aspect, it felt more of just an option. Could I mention anything about that? I’m just a little nervous. Should I bring my resume? Some threads I’ve seen suggest I bring a resume to all college interviews but I’m not sure if that is tacky. Thank you so much for the responses. If you need any more information about myself I can provide it.

I had my interview about two weeks ago. I too go to a Catholic school. I am a guy but I just wore my school uniform, so sperries, khaki pants, and a button down shirt so it didn’t seem like I tried to dress up and be overdressed because I was wearing something that I always have to wear but it still looks nice and formal nonetheless. I was also coming from school so it worked. For why gtown, which my interviewer made a pretty big emphasis on, I said how georgetown accommodates all my potential interests, because I am not 100% on the major but have a general idea. I also said how I loved DC and wanted to go since we went to DC on a school trip six years ago, so saying you like DC isnt a bad thing. I also said how the history and tradition really excites me. If i remember correctly I said “any time before 1800 gets me giddy” ha ha ha because it was est 1793. I am pretty religious and am involved with my school’s campus ministry and retreats and whatnot so I said the Jesuit influence was important to me. I wouldnt mention that youre not particularly religious maybe something like “how much of a religious influence is on campus” when they ask any questions for me. But from my experience, it did not smother me at all. I would probably it pass off as nonaffiliated school had i not known it was catholic or if there wasnt a chapel right in the middle of campus. also the wide availability of internships and opportunities in DC. Even just saying that it is someplace new and exciting.
I did not bring a resume. When I emailed my guy, he said it will be fairly informal. At the interview he said he was trying to get the stuff about me that wouldnt be on a resume. But it definitely wouldnt hurt to bring one and be prepared. Maybe have it a bag or back pack with you just in case he/she asks for it or you can ask them if they would like to look at it. Looking back, it would probably show more initiative had I brought one so I would suggest to bring one but dont have it on the table waiting for them.
ps. dont be nervous. Gtown was my first interview so i was also nervous. but it was 10x easier and more relaxed than i expected. It really is just a conversation. And there werent any hard pressed questions that would require to think of something on a spot. Just talking about yourself. We also talked a lot about activities outside school. So maybe prepare some explanations on your EC’s and why you love them etc. The only question that made me think is “what is the hardest part about doing that” in reference to a program i am involved with working with kids at a boys and girls club.
Best of luck with the interview and the app process! btw, are you applying EA?

@raider659816 Thank you for the detailed response! If I bring my resume, should I just have it with me or do you think I should ask my interviewer if he would like to see a copy? Also I’m applying regular decision

@tuty143 just bring your resume in a portfolio if you have one. If your interviewer hasn’t asked for your resume by the end of the interview, just mention it at the very end. Having a resume shows that you’re prepared.

@marchmattness13 Should I bring anything else in the portfolio? or is just the resume enough.

@tuty143 it’s good to also bring a notepad and pen if your interviewer mentions anything important, as well as a printed list of questions to ask your interviewer at the end.

I would bring a resume and offer it up front. Say, “I brought a resume if you’d like to have one.” If he/she takes it, hopefully, there’s something interesting on it that will spark conversation. If the interviewer says it’s not necessary, then fine. Usually, you are interviewing before you actually apply so it’s not like the interviewer knows much about you. Some will like using a resume, some won’t. No biggie.

Personally, I would stay away from you want to be in D.C. and the like. Because if you want to be in D.C. you could be at GW or American or any of the other area universities. Your why Georgetown answer should be about Georgetown, not the city. I like where you were going with being pre-med and so you wonder how cura personalis might figure into your undergraduate studies. It’s mentioned on the med school page so I think that’s a great question/curiosity: https://som.georgetown.edu/about/curapersonalis

Have you Googled your interviewer? That might give you a clue as to how dressed up on a Tuesday he/she may be. If it’s a corporate lawyer, then dressing up is no big deal. If it’s a high-tech guy, maybe you don’t need to be too dressy. It’s a Tuesday so a work day so the interviewer might be coming from work and dressed accordingly.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes. Ds2 thought his Gtown interview was his worst, but he got in.

My interview was 2 1/2 hours long. I was surprised how they conducted the interview. The alum talked more than I did! I learned a lot but was caught off guard by how much he shared! He was an FBI agent and had arrested one of the defendants I had worked for on a case this summer as an intern so we talked about that a lot! Mention something completely out of the box to catch interest. They are hearing the same thing from almost every candidate so get personal! My interviewer gave me tips on what to write in my app, so they are rooting for you! You should also mention being catholic since 20% of the school is. That’s a pretty large demographic and can’t do anything but help your chances! Good luck! <3
