Georgetown McDonough School of Business Ads

So what's up with that? In my mind, any college that uses advertisements are usually low reputation schools that need to market their product. So far, this has been true. So what's with MSB advertising their degree? Is that a bad sign?

The MSB is aggressively advertising its executive education, evening program and other grad programs. We have a new business school building and the administration is looking to capitalize on it (particularly as undergrads typically do not have classes on Fridays). Their getting the full bang for their real estate buck.

Do I worry that it will cheapen my degree? No. The ads are for entirely different degrees. It’s also not an online degree. DC has one of the highest educated populations. Through in government funding and lots of professionals get masters degrees while working full-time.

Even if it is for “entirely different degrees,” they are still advertising the whole school. And plenty of universities get new buildings every year on every tier of prestige, but I’ve never seen them try to capitalize on it with advertising (except for those few who regularly advertise anyways).

I’m sure the vast majority of the public will be confused about different degrees and whatnot. But the people who will be interviewing you will know the difference between the degrees and know what its worth.

Btw, where did you see the ads? On TV or on the Metro?

So far:

Facebook

Youtube

College Confidential

haha yeah these ads are all ove college confidential

A quick browse through Youtube and you’ll be able to see it as well.

Shrug There used to be ads for Johns Hopkins Carey School of Business all over the DC Metrorail system (Metrobus too, I think, although I don’t remember those specifically). Would you suggest that this cheapens the value of a Johns Hopkins degree?

Heck, even Wharton has advertisements like this: [Wharton Brand Standards ? The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania](http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/standards/templates_advertising.cfm)

Executive MBA programs, certificates, etc. are a booming business and schools are advertising them aggressively. McDonough timed their major advertising push to coincide with the opening of the Hariri Building. Nothing surprising or “cheaping” about this in the least.
