Georgetown odds

I'm a current senior whose dream school is Georgetown University. I applied early, but was deferred.

I have roughly an 89% GPA for my high school career. It was around 90-91 for my first two years. Junior year I took AP Physics B and AP Calculus AB and got high 70's - low 80's in each class, but I did well in a lot of my other classes (french 4, italian 1, AP US) so my average remained at around an 89-90.

I have been the chair of the International Criminal Courts for Model UN for about 2 years, and I am the captain of the Mock Trial team this year. I have also played varsity tennis since 8th grade. I have had two law internships, the most recent being with my local District Attorney's office this past summer/fall. I also have about 200 logged hours of community service.

I've done reasonably well for my first semester of senior year; I'm taking BC Calculus (I took it because I think it's interesting and my friends are in it, even if I get low grades in it), AP Micro/Macro, and AP Psych, as well as Gov/Law (not AP) and English 4. I have about a 91 average overall.

I wrote two very good essays for my Georgetown application (I'm a very good writer - it's my main academic strong point), but the rest of my application isn't terribly notable. My grandfather went to Georgetown for undergraduate and law school, my father went to Georgetown for law school, and my sister is a freshman there now. I've grown up hearing great stories about Georgetown; the great education, the surrounding area, the school spirit, et cetera. and I think it shone through in my essays. However, I'm wondering if this kind of thing will be enough to get me admitted.

I also sent in a letter about a week ago reaffirming my interest and devotion to the school, and saying that I would unconditionally matriculate if I got accepted.

Any thoughts? I got into Fordham early, which is a great safety school to have in the wings, but I really, really want to go to Georgetown. Also, all of the other schools I applied to are top tier like Georgetown. Should I just be glad I got into Fordham, or is it a realistic possibility?

does your school rank? what did you get on the SAT or ACT?

no, my school doesn't rank. I got a 720 Critical Reading, 680 Math, 700 Writing. I also got a 600 Math level 2 and 690 US history for the subject tests.

I also got a 30 on the ACT, with near perfect scores on the english sections but not great scores for math and science.

Has anything changed in terms of academics, honors, etc. since the deferral? Did you father talk to the school since?

nothing has really changed. My second marking period grades have dropped slightly, but my first semester average should still end up at in the high 80's. My dad hasn't called or contacted the school to my knowledge... since he went to the law school, he doesn't have a concrete relationship with the college except paying for my sister's education there.

your grades are pretty low. the typical accepted student at georgetown has an A average. coupled with the legacy, i feel it might have been a polite rejection.

I'm not saying anything for sure, but me and two friends both applied EA to Georgetown and were deferred with much higher numbers. I'm not a legacy, but I think one of them might be, and I'm an URM. I'm just letting you know who else was also deferred, and that many (or at least some) were more qualified.

Don't give up! The same thing happened to me EA and I erroneously interpreted my deferral to be a rejection. After I pretty much threw Georgetown off the table, I was accepted in April, decided to come here after I put down a deposit at another school and I could not have made a better decision.

My test scores were not impressive for a school like Georgetown but I feel like the admissions office here truly does look at each applicant holistically. Between my essays and the passions that I conveyed in my application, I feel like I made myself stand out in a sea of extremely well-qualified applicants. If you're confident in your essays, I certainly wouldn't lose any hope!

Well, your stats puts you at the lower spectrum of Georgetown applicants, but they certainly don't kick you out of the game.
