Hello everyone! I have a really tough decision to make that I was hoping you all could help me with: [ul][li]should I go to Georgetown or Berkeley?[/ul]
[/li]

I am currently undecided, and price is not really a factor (although I am instate for Berkeley). Any opinions? Thanks for your help! :D

Go to Georgetown. It's much harder to get into than Berkeley. If you don't like it, or become homesick for California, you can transfer to Berkeley. Why deal with the huge class sizes at Berkeley if you can afford not to?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I'm actually in the same position, but I'm in at Cal for the spring semester. Hm.

I dislike nothing more than uneducated postuluates, so I decided to offer statistical data to see if the above poster was right:

Berkeley:

26% admitted in state, 21% out of state, 12% international.

Average weighted GPA: 4.23

SAT I
Verbal: 580-710
Math: 630-740

Okay, but here's the catch: Berkeley, as a UC, admits many students with seemingly lower scores in order to meet the mission of comprehensive review. That said, here's GTown:

EA Admits:

Percent Admitted 25%

SAT Verbal Middle 50% 680-750
SAT Math Middle 50% 680-740

Regular Admits:

Percent Admitted 22%

SAT Verbal Middle 50% 660-760
SAT Math Middle 50% 660-750

So how is Georgetown "much harder" to get into than Cal?

Also, your chances of transferring to Cal from an out-of-state school are slim to none, because UC policies are to serve California students first.

My recommendation: Base your decision on campus visits and facts, not hearsay, including my own. Cal and GTown are VERY different schools.

Depends what you want to go into.

Science/Math/Engineering: Berkeley

Business/Social Sciences: Georgetown

Even in the social sciences, there are programs at Cal that blow GTown out of the water, and vice versa. For example, Berkeley has a superior psych program. For political science undergrad, however, I'd recommend GTown despite its lower ranking. Why? Location.

Cal is also a stronger contender in Econ, English, and sociology.

But who cares? Go to where you'll do well, both are great undergrad programs.

Well I will not be going into any math or science related field, so does this change anything? I will most likely major in something like political science, international business, marketing, philosophy, or perhaps a foreign language. In the future, I am considering everything from law school to business school.

i think that if you are considering law, business school, poli sci or int. business....Georgetown on paper is the much better fit. It's in DC and also has an amazing international relations program...

but i still think you should visit both because Georgetown may fit on paper...but you might hate it there.

For the record, both GTown and Berkeley have top grad programs in poli sci, law, and business. Anyone who discounts either one is a fool.

However, it doesn't matter to you as an undergrad. You need to look and figure what will suit you better. This whole, "GTown is ranked higher, Cal is ranked higher" game is just going to go in circles, leaving you dizzy and confused.

Try visiting them both, seriously. I cannot stress enough how different they are.

If I had to choose between Georgetown or Berkeley, I would probably go with Berkeley. However, that's because I live in Washington, DC, and I don't want to go to school so close to where I live. So, that automatically would scratch out Georgetown for me.

Yeah, but Georgetown is a powerhouse for government/law jobs. Not to discount Berkeley at all, but Georgetown obviously has the best resource in the country.

Okay, there I agree. If you want to work in the public sector, GTown is your thing. However, this is what lots of people in town have said:

"Eh, undergrad doesn't matter that much. You can't do much here in DC without your master's anyway."

So, if someone wants Cal, I say go for it! Then, come to GTown for your MSFS or something, and go off and do a PMF stint, and then get your plum job.

At least that's my plan. :p

Cool, thanks for the advice! :)
