I am a junior in high school, and I am planning on majoring in International Relations/Affairs in college. I am almost certain I want to attend college in Washington, D.C. However, my yop two choices are Georgetown and George Washington. I have not toured them yet but I am planning to do so. Georgetown seems like a more selective and better school when it comes to its education. However George Washington is also very good and is located 4 blocks from the White House

Which college is better...Georgetown or George Washington?

I'll likely be going to school in D.C. this coming fall. Georgetown is the most academically prestigious, but it is very selective and difficult to get into (my stats don't qualify me). Some other schools in the D.C. area that you may want to check out in addition to GWU, are American University and the University of Maryland College Park.

Georgetown and George Washington are both terrific schools for someone with your interests. They are both academically very selective, with Georgetown being even more stringent as far as SAT and GPA requirements. They each have different environments as you will see on your visit. GWU is a true "city school". The students are very career-oriented and involved with internships, which are very accessible due to the location. Georgetown is slightly more secluded from the hustle and bustle of the city and has a more "traditional" college feel.

Georgetown has more "old prestige", and more of a traditional campus feel. It's also quite Catholic (if that makes any difference to you).

GWU has a more busy, progressive vibe. Slightly more career-oriented, I would say. But it's also incredibly urban, and doesn't really have the traditional campus.

Both are great schools. It just depends on what you want.

I'll also second the recommendations for American and UMD.

I know kids who love the hustle and bustle of GW and could never see themselves at Georgetown, and I know kids who love the pristene tranquility of Georgetown and would never go to GW. At GW, we were bombarded with handouts to meet at the White House, the Supreme Court, the Capital, etc, and there were fliers and posters all over, at Georgetown, my D said that it seemed as if one would be arrested if they ever tried to tape up flier on the immaculate walls--every flower, tree and bush was in its place. It seemed as most of the students at Georgetown were thinking of Law, Business or Medical school, and it has a very traditional academic scene--it has much more of a prep school feeling. Its funny how different the atmospheres were, it all depends on what the student is looking for

GW is much more modern feeling and urban whereas Georgetown definitely has a prep school vibe. lots of ornate buildings and chandeliers and that kind of stuff. For undergrad, either would probably be fine for international affairs. Georgetown does have a better reputation and GW is sometimes thought of as Georgetown's Waitlist, which is actually not far from the truth LOL.

Many, many people do not think of GWU as Georgetown's Waitlist. GWU offers a broader range of programs than Georgetown and if you are interested in one of those particular programs then you wouldn't even consider Georgetown. Also, GWU offers merit aid and Georgetown does not. As noted above, some people prefer the energetic, modern vibe at GW. This characterization of GW as Georgetown's Waitlist is not accurate.

yes, that is more true, but then the acronym just doesn't work. its just a joke anyway. a lot of the people here didn't even apply to georgetown. its exaggerated anyway.

Once you visit both schools, your decision will be much easier. Georgetown is a majority Catholic school, while GWU is approx. one-third Jewish. Georgetown's strength is the Walsh School of Foreign Service, while GWU has a number of excellent majors. A few years ago GWU dorms were regarded as best in the nation. Both are excellent universities, but some think that Georgetown is over-rated outside of the Walsh SFS.

D looked at both - and liked both. Georgetown for gorgeous campus, intellectual vibe, GWU for the energy, and city vibe. Both offer lots of opportunities for internships in gov, journalism, etc. Statistically, GW is somewhat easier to get into.

She's applying to GW, but it's more because when Georgetown got compared to some other schools that were at a similar level "reach"of she preferred them (Tufts, Pomona, Claremont McKenna), while she stands a reasonable shot at getting in at George Washington.

Also in the general area - Johns Hopkins has a terrific International Relationships program.

My 2 cents - I was astonished by the number of students at Georgetown wearing suits. Not my vision of undergrad years, but everyone is different.

I can attest to the GW = Georgetown's Waitlist.

I go to GWU and was an extended waitlistee at Georgetown. One of the big reasons I chose GWU was because I am planning to transfer for next fall. A lot of kids at GWU do this. Apply to both, and stay overnight at both if you can...Just visit to see which fits you better: a more traditional, prep-school type academic environment with kids looking to top ten grad schools; or a bureaucrat factory in the heart of a city with kids looking to graduate early and start work in the State Dept. ASAP.
