i'm going to be applying to college soon, and i wanted to know some pros and cons of georgetown and george washington. i only want to put time and money into one application in D.C. because i live on the west coast and i probably won't go there anyway, but it would still be nice to know some information about each of those universities from current students or alums. thanks for your input!

DC is among the top places to study Government, International Affairs or Business. GW has taken large steps to modernize and create innovative educational experience. Let me know if you are in fact interested in studying in DC.

Georgetown is more competitive, but GW has been steadily rising...

For my d., it was neither. American. Better integrative international business/international service than either of them. For her.

You have to kick the tires....

Both are good schools. It comes down to what you are looking to get out of your college experience and where you feel more comfortable. In the end, if you feel like you don't fit into the student body then you won't be a very effective student honestly. Visit both campuses, see which one you mesh with better. They are both close in terms of rankings and academic strengths, so evaluate them based on their feel.

Georgetown has a traditional, beautiful, leafy campus with lawns, gothic architecture, etc. GW doesn't really have a campus (they're in downtown row houses) other than the former woman's college three miles from downtown on which they have some housing and athletic fields. My D applied to both and got a very generous aid package from Gtown that would have reduced the out-of-pocket cost to $12,000 / year. She got a half-tuition scholarship at GW, but even after that, it would have been over $30,000 / year. GW has a very convenient Metro stop; Gtown has to bus students to a Metro stop on the VA side of the river. GW's Foggy Bottom area is surrounded by offices and can be dead on the weekends; the Georgetown neighborhood is hopping on the weekends.

I would suggest George Washington as their new ethically driven international business curriculum is of greater interest because of the credit crisis taking place. George Washington's convenient location, small class size, and increased career center support seems to put the individual student as the top priority, not the current magazine ranking. I have looked at other schools with higher rankings, but this new program seems to be more visible and on par with other top tier schools.

I've reapplied to GW after being denied for fall admission. I have no idea what to expect this time around. I've to a lot to produce a competitive result with my application. We'll see. Should we start a thread for spring GW transfers?
