Georgetown SFS International Economics Vs Northwestern Economics

Well, it is narrowed down to these two choices. Both are the same price. We visited Georgetown today and loved it. The intent is to major in economics. Northwestern has a world class econ program, but I understand that Georgetown's School of Foreign Service is very prestigious and offers an International Economics program as well as 5 other interesting majors within the school. All that said, my son has a passion for politics and world affairs which has drawn him to Gtowns Iecon program and the SFS school. Not to mention the access to DC and internships. Everything is saying Georgetown, but how can you pass up NW economics? Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

passing up any school for Georgetown SFS is perfectly understandable

In general I would say go with Northwestern over Georgetown, but it sounds like Georgetown is the better option given your son’s interests. I don’t think you’d regret choosing either option though.

I think that they are both great opportunities but remember that georgetown is more conservative. Also the school has an intensive core with almost 20 required classes so it depends if you want that or not. However it does have a great program as does Northwestern. My students who have gone to Northwestern have had a great experience but so have my students at Georgetown.

Thanks to all. We visited Northwestern. It is a great campus. World class econ program. Decisions, decisions. It should not make a difference, but Gtown id half the distance. I think it boils down to this. If he wants an “Econ” degree, go to NW. No brainer, but if he wants an International econ degree in unique world class international relations department then it is Gtown. I can’t help but think, however, that NW would be more conducive to a more lucrative career. We also found out that NW wants students to have a few years of work experience prior to applying for the Kellog’s school of Business or NW Law school. NW has access to Chicago’s business world, but Gtown has DC and endless opportunities for internships.

I can totally understand why you are struggling with the decision. It really is a tough call.

I asked the girl working at Starbucks on the turnpike in Ohio what she would do (I don’t think she ever heard of either school). She looked confused, and then she responded, “Georgetown?” There you go, and to think we have been struggling with this!

Well, after a long debate, it’s Georgetown! That SFS program is too impressive to pass up.
