Georgetown SFS vs. Northwestern

I got into both of my top reach schools, and now I don’t know what to do. I’ve never been to DC, but I really love the idea of foreign service. However, I’ve heard that most kids that graduate from SFS end up in the private sector. With Northwestern, I’ll be at a higher ranked school (arbitrary, I know) and will be able to try out different academic areas of interest other than IR (econ, polisci, linguistics) due to the quarter system. If I’ll end up in the private sector anyway, would Northwestern be the better choice? As for financial aid, I uploaded all of mine and my parents’ tax info in February to IDOCs, but of course College Board screwed that up, so I don’t have any FA information as of yet. I know this is a great problem to have, but I don’t want to make the wrong choice.

What do you want to get into? International Business?

I know you don’t have FA information yet but generally can your parents afford either school? If so, I think it’s a personal preference. If you really want to go into international relations, I would go Georgetown. Visit both schools obviously and get a feel for the campus and the surrounding areas. Chicago is different from DC.

@TheDidactic‌ Thanks for your response. I’m pretty sure that with my family’s EFC, both schools will be around the same price as the in state UC I got into. I’ve wanted to work for the State Department for a few years now, but I’m not sure how viable an option it is for me. At Northwestern I’d probably major in econ with the intention of international business. At Georgetown, I’d try to get recruited by the State Department. Luckily, Georgetown offered to fly me out to visit, so I’ll see the school before May 1st.

Congrats on getting the paid visit to GTown. Check it out and get a feel for DC.

If you’re interested in global studies (somewhat related to your interests I think), check out the Buffet Institute (http://buffett.northwestern.edu/). NU recently got $100M from Warren Buffet’s sister to beef up this institute.

Also check out NU’s MMSS program and Kellogg Certificate programs…both programs have very strong job/grad school placement records: (http://www.mmss.northwestern.edu/undergraduate/employment-placements.html)
