Georgetown Summer Program for High School Students

Hey guys, I live in VA, I'm a sophomore, and I'm really into business, finance, etc. I was looking at the Fundamentals of Business Program at Georgetown and it looks pretty good! Has been in it before? How hard is it to get into? Is it worth the money? Sorry for asking so many questions, but I really want to get a feel for it before I blow a couple grand on it. Thanks everyone!

Hey,
Been there 2 years ago, as a rising junior.
It was literally…not worth it. Its only worth it in my opinion is if they award you scholarship, and you take extra college courses that gives you (if I’m remembering right) 3 credits each. The Professor mainly in charge (Thomas Cooke), always side tracks and a lot of the time is wasted. Although it did overall give me a better knowledge of the campus, and DC/Georgetown life, it wasn’t as exciting as I thought it would be. Sure some of the concepts in Marketing classes, or Finance Classes, etc were interesting (They only teach you the general idea), it wasn’t the intense kind of course i was seeking. It basically gives you a general overview of each of the fields of business, and probably the most rewarding part of it is finding out along with your team how to write a business plan without any help or guidance. The courses rarely relate to your business plan. Although I have to say, the MSB building (newly built and not open at that time) is looking great! Basically, you should fill your schedule up with more classes or else its not worth it.
Good luck!

Thank you so much! This is exactly what I was looking for. Do you know if they are actually selective about who get’s in, or is it just something you sign up for and get into? What did your app look like?

Last summer, my son, a rising senior, enrolled in Georgetown’s 5 week summer college program. He took a computer science course, 15 kids were in the class, he was the only high school student, most were undergrads, a few were grad students, but he had the best time of his life. He received a scholarship, 3 transferable college credits and a letter of recommendation from his professor to Georgetown. It was a very worth-while experience.

Wow, that sounds amazing! Do you know anything about the Fundamentals of Business program?

^^ No, I don’t know anything about the Fundamentals of Business program.

BTW: One downside to my son’s summer at Georgetown was the food. We had originally purchased the 21-meal-a-week plan for him, however, he hated the food options, and so did the majority of his friends. We were able to get Georgetown to refund the meal plan and my son ate out on M Street for less than the cost of what Georgetown was charging us – and the food was better.

Does anyone have experience with their Medical Institute program for high school students? Thanks!
