Is hear-say considered truly emperical?

i took a course in Ethics too, the text we used is called Vice & Virtue in Everyday Life, and the forwards by Christina Sommers, who I dont like.

Well... I think we are both responsible for equivocating the argument:

1) You argue that there must be empirical grounds for making an observation.
2) I argue that i) I fulfill your criterion and ii) that your criterion is arbitrary and self-defeating, even if you do not buy my argument.
3) You argue that I do not fulfill your criterion because I use hearsay.
4) And you are correct, hearsay does fall under empirical observation. However, the title of "hearsay" does not necessarily mean that I am incorrect in my statements; it merely casts doubt.
5) If I concede that you win, and thus my hearsay is illegitimate and does not fulfill your criterion, I would still come out on top since the criterion you establish is inherently arbitrary and self-defeating.

Here is why it is self-defeating...
1) Person A argues that a statement is true if it can be empirically verified.
2) But the statement "a statement is true if it can be empirically verified" is not itself empirically verifiable, so it fails on its own grounds.

ok, i think its safe to say that this thread got just a little bit off topic

Nah, but its good off topic, I like talking about this...

But seriously, is it anyone elses experience who has gotten into philosophy that your interest has come about not only because you feel good about what you are reading, but because Philosophy professors care about their work.

Maybe its just my experience, but I think its pretty friggin' hard to get a Ph.D, or teach a class in Philosophy without loving it. I mean, even the terrible philosophy professors I've had are clearly very passionate about their work and believe that it is important...whereas alot of Political Science professors view teaching almost as a necessary evil. Thats my thought.

I also like Philosophy because it is challenging. I grew up as a history buff so all these Political Science/History/even Sociology classes are in many ways easy unto the point where I don't even have to review the material to suceed. Philosophy courses are the only ones that I've encountered where I've had to put substantial effort into producing quality work. Isn't that what college is supposed to be? Lots of hard work resulting in aquisition of knowledge that we feel to be important? I just feel like an actual student when I'm studying philosophy, even if it is the most basic material up unto this point

my philo teacher clearly knew the work very well and could have taught us a lot if he wasn't so introverted...no one talked in class so he didn't talk to us either.

Be careful, soon you will advance so far in philosophy that you will question the verity of knowledge itself. How can we know that we know? How can we know that we know that we know? How can we know that we know that we know that we know? And so on...

LOL...I like talking to you nspeds, I sincerely think you need to get out of the house sometimes, but nonetheless, I know I could learn alot from someone like you.

I just want to be happy on my death bed. I just want to know that I spent my life chasing my own dreams and not somebody elses. I don't know if I'm doing that now or not...

Accepted into McDonough School of Business!!!! So excited. Btw. they did only take 250 out of 1400 spots.

Your letter said 250 or 200?

They still need to accept more than 250, because not everyone who gets accepted matriculates.

right, but my question was did the letter say 250, or did he add 50 to account for what you just said.

There are 1450 applicants for 200 spaces.

Nothing in the mail today! This is soooo annoying!

Word

Even worse is the fact that I got a letter on Friday from Georgetown requesting all my financial information. I reluctantly sent it out because I'm under the impression that my financial situation might end up influencing the decision. Man :(

^No man.

That's a good thing! If they requested your financial aid then one could conjecture that you're in very good standing and they require your financial aid information to finalize everything dealing with your acceptance. Plus, Georgetown has need-blind admissions, or so they say. :)

congratulations lotrfan33 and nsped and basically everyone who has gotten a response by now. I'm in the south but I haven't received anything so its not looking too good. I should find out tomorrow or wednesday though :(

That's exactly what scares me though...

If they were going to accept me, then why not just mail the letter out like everyone else who got accepted on this board? Why would they need my financial information before they sent out a decision? The only conclusion I can draw is that somehow, my financial information will play some role in the decision.

Has anyone that has been accepted recieved supplimental information from Geogetown yet (netID, housing information, etc...).

i got a packet but i dont think it has a netID, theres some housing information and vaccination requirements...

masta, how long did it take for the packet to arrive after you received your acceptance letter?
