Georgetown Transfer Questions

I'm wondering if it's worth for me to apply to georgetown...

-3.93 GPA @ a CC (3 semesters done, finishing the 4th semester hopefully with a 4.0). Most pre-reqs are don (accounting, economics, calculus, statistics, etc)
-ACT: 23 (very low, I know. I'm extremely worried how much this would affect me)
-URM
-major: business
-HS stats: some AP's, graduated with honors and a 3.8+ GPA...

ECs:

Katrina cleanup
Toys for Tots & other fund raisers
Basketball team in HS
PTK (phi Theta Kappa)
Dean's list every semester in college
Tutoring

Travel Experience/background:

-I've visited large part of Mexico.
-Madrid, Spain.
-Visited a large part of the United States (California, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Missouri and Kansas).
-Summer trip to Havana, Cuba.

I think i could write some strong essays as well due to my life experiences

Basically I feel I have a strong resume, with the exception of the ACT (which I can't retake before applying for the Fall of 07). I don't know how much this could hurt me, or if it's even worth to apply to the MSB.

Thanks for making this thread btw, it's very helpful!

nspeds...immediate family only? My dad went there..:)

nspeds, what do you think of my chances to McDonough? Is it worth a shot?

IT's definitely worth it, but I would be wary of your SAT scores. The fact that you are rebounding from a less than perfect high school record is actually very much a positive factor in deliberation.

Also, did you get a Dean's report from your previous school? Georgetown recommends one, but since my school is so big... I've never met the Dean. It seems like he would be hard to approach given the circumstances (me leaving his school for a better one).

Yes, I did. The dean's rec is not really anything that asks for a detailed report of the student; it simply asks for details that can be recalled from a student's file. Whether or not your dean knows you that well as a person is irrelevant. Don't worry about it.

With your GPA, it is worth applying; however, if you are rejected, I wouldn't be surprise if it was because of your ACT score.

Silly question, but I forgot to attach a picture to my transfer app.....should I send one now or does it not make a difference?

nspeds, do you think retaking the ACT at this point in my college career (after 2nd year) and getting a better score would help in the admissions process ?. I would retake it and study my butt of for it to get a better score as long as it is worth it...

I'm not sure how Georgetown (among other schools) would look at my ACT score taken so late in my college career. Are you familiar with this issue ?

I don't think they care, but you should call the admissions office and confirm.

Well... the SAT/ACT functions to demonstrate how well a student can perform in his/her first year of college level work. When coming from a regular four-year school with a really high GPA comprising two years of work, I don't think standardized tests matter.

However, when applying from CCs, I think the SAT/ACT is used as an additional assurance that the student can handle the work at a specific school. I recommend retaking the exam only if you will score significantly higher.

what's the deal nspeds you get into HLS yet or what?

Does Georgetown place alot of emphasis on the SAT score if I transfer for junior standing?

I got an 1870 (680 CR; 540 M; 650 WR), took 3 SAT II's with scores >650, and currently have a 3.7 GPA at an affiliated Jesuit school. Oh, and I'm declaring philosophy as a major.

Why do the SATs still matter? That was two years ago though

I have neither applied to HLS nor taken the LSAT yet.

How they weight it depends on other factors. If your HS transcript is decent, I cannot imagine that it will count for much; if your HS transcript is poor, however, you will need everything you can get going for you.

I went to a mediocre (lets just say "underperforming") public high school, managed a 3.7 GPA, and took 3 AP courses (which were the only ones offered, proving how bad my hs is).

How would they weight this? Won't they doubt my capability because I went to a bad hs?

I cannot be sure; then again, it is probably too late to retake the SAT, so I would go ahead and give it a shot.

Nobody answered my earlier thread, so maybe this will work: Is it easier to transfer to SFS if one is applying from an international studies school. For example, if someone is applying to SFS from American University's School of International Service, or GWU's?

I dunno if anyone is still answering q's on this thread, but what do you think my chances at McDonough would be:

junior level transfer
currently a sophomore business-economics major at UCLA
3.81 gpa
1390 sat
4.0 hs gpa
captain of the football team, yearbook editor, mock trial, concert choir, tennis team, csf vice president, writer for the town newspaper, etc.
college: cluster assembly member, intern for UCLA marketing--dj for UCLA men's basketball games.

You are probably in. Good luck.

nspeds, I applied to the College as a sophomore level transfer for Fall '06 and made the waiting list. do you think the fact that i previously applied should boost my chances somewhat? my gpa has consistently increased from a 3.65, to a 3.73, to a 3.79, so im hoping they also place some sort of emphasis on grade trends. :P thanks in advance for any insight you may have :)

That you were waitlisted as a sophomore transfer, and that your stats have only improved from when you were waitlist, I'm willing to bet that you have a really good shot:)

Good luck! I guess I'm applying to Georgetown along with you guys; the Law Center, that is, though my application materials are due on the 15th of March:P

Y'all what would you do if you couldn't write a creative essay worth a lick. My essays are all very straight and to the point...I don't know how to twist and turn them into something more interesting!

Most of my essays were like that. Believe me when I say it is a virtue: at least the adcom knows they aren't reading a pile of bull$hit.

With explicating your reasons, and such, it is especially important to be clear, pithy, concise, and persuasive.

hey nspeds, what is the likelihood of someone with a terrible hs gpa of like a 2.2 with 2 years of credits of college gpa from a cc with a 3.7ish+ getting into georgetown with a really good essay, letter of reccs, great ec's, and all that jazz, etc getting in? or am i ruined because of my bad hs transcript?

If anything happens (job, award, honor, etc.) between now and the time where adcom makes decisions about acceptance/rejection, should we send a letter to Georgetown or not?
