Georgetown Transfer

Georgetown is the only school that I'm applying to transfer too because its really the only school in the Nation that has exactly what I want: a rigourous and intensive Arabic program.

I can write a great essay, can get great recommendations, have some good EC's (School Newspaper, Tutoring impoverished kids on the benefits of an education, World Affaris Concil, Piano, Turntables, I do the bookeeping for my mothers business, etc)...I also had a 3.7 GPA at my state school, was in the honors program, etc.

I'm at Tufts right now, and just got here in January and as such I don't have a GPA here, yet. I came because I wanted to major in Near Eastern Studies but the program here is more historically based, which is fine and originally what I wanted, but if I'm going to make study in this field my career, which I want to, than I think the best way to make that happen is to obtain a mastery of the languages of the Near East.

I'm going to do the inteview and if possible meet with an advisor and some of the directors of the department of Arabic.

My question is this: Is there anything else that I can do, or should be doing to boost my chances of acceptance. I realize that admissions is extremely competitve at Georgetown and my chances of getting in are about 20% at best. I'm really willing to do anything possible to get into this school since it is the ONLY school in the nation that has the exact program that I am looking for.

Any suggestions would be dearly appreciated

No one has any suggestions?

Honestly, if you can show THAT strong of a connection with the school, then your odds of admission improve significantly. If you are very strong at Arabic Language Studies, and if you can demonstrate that, Georgetown will look positively on that because of their top level program in the field. In my mind, if you pull it off right, this could be a very strong hook.

That being said, your college GPA is going to be important, and you'll need to demonstrate very strong competence in your area of chosen study. Your SAT scores will be important, but if you got into Tufts as a tranfer, I suspect they either were good or they don't count for much in the transfer process. HS GPA is a little on the low side for Georgetown, but if your college GPA is strong, there should be no problems.

Anyway ... you just have to follow through with your hook. Good luck.

Joey

Thanks Joey,

I've been taking private tutoring lessons at the Boston Language Institute because Tufts doesn't offer intro to Arabic courses in the Spring...also I've been studying it on my own with the basic "Intro to Standard Arabic" books that you buy at the store

Georgetown would better suit my persuit since I'm only able to take about 3 hours of Arabic every week, and even the upper level courses for Arabic at Tufts only meet two or three times a week for about an hour.

My SAT scores were terrible, but Tufts didn't even request them...thats what scares me about Georgetown although I hear that there are ways to avoid sending your SAT's if you have acadmically proven yourself at the college level.

Thanks again and any more suggestions would be most graciously apprecitated
