If some of the 2021 batch got their decisions as early as the 8th then they should have been mailed already, but I live in Maryland, half hour drive away from DC, and still nothing!!! I hope I get mine a few days early too
In past years Georgetown has posted on its Facebook and Twitter when they have mailed the letters. By the looks of it, they have not even sent them out yet. Last year I believe they mailed on the 13th but many people received them late, so they might move the mail date up this year.
ah this is really good to know, will keep a lookout on their social media; are u an undergrad student? @samseager5
@tmn2000 Nope! Just a very paranoid detective wanting to get into Georgetown haha
Ohh hahahah! Thorough research bro
Seeing as all of us on this forum are reallly keen on getting in, I just wanted to ask you all a question regarding the social scene at Georgetown. This school has been my absolute dream uni for a long time, but I’ve recently reached out to alumni inquiring as to how it was transitioning the first year, ie what was it like meeting new people, finding your crowd, etc. and while I have heard a lot of really positive feedback (super international community, everyone really friendly, etcetc) I have also heard that social interaction revolves heavily around club culture, and it can get very competitive and cliquey at times, which is definitely something Im not fond of. Have you guys heard similar things, and do you find this as off putting as I do?
@tmn2000 I’ve heard (albeit through only one friend who goes there, so take it with many grains of salt) that its very much what you seek out and make of it. Like the club culture is there if you seek it out but if not, its not nearly as cliquey as stereotyped.
@samseager5 After seeing letters from last year, they are in fact stamped December 13. That’s odd that my counselor straight up told me he had someone receive a letter on the 8. Maybe he got confused with another school.
@tmn2000 SFS class of 2021 here. The reason why social life often revolves around club culture is because there’s no university-recognized greek life, unlike some other schools where social life is heavily Greek-based. Although greek life does exist, they don’t get university funding and so they aren’t a main part of campus social life. Because of that, clubs tend to fill in that void and provide more of the social life than you would see at other schools. Some clubs are very competitive to get into, but those are usually professionally-oriented career clubs like consulting agencies and the Georgetown credit union. Because those clubs provide a lot of career experience, they have a low acceptance rate. And while those clubs do provide a social scene for their members, there are tons of clubs here that are not competitive to get in at all that provide the same thing. As an SFS student, I’m heavily involved in the International Relations Club, which has no application to get in and offers events to everyone. So it really depends on which clubs you’re talking about. If you’re looking at the more career-based ones, then yes it is much more competitive and cliquey, but there are also tons of clubs that offer great opportunities without being cliquey.
Does anyone know if it is true that being from a state that is sometimes underrepresented helps your chances?
@masquerade98 For the competitive clubs with applications, what exactly does this process entail? Is it simply based off of what you’ve done in high school? Grades? Is there an interview process?
@2022hoyaplease I feel like this is true for most schools. I could be wrong.
I don’t think it would be something that would really do much and it wouldn’t be a hook. Because admissions, especially at Georgetown, is so holistic, I think it may just be something that’ll give a tiny nudge.
@justliviglife For freshman, at least, it’ll largely be stuff you’ve done in high school because you really don’t have any other experience. Most “competitive” clubs will have an application with a couple questions on it and ask for a one-page resume. Most will also have interviews. Georgetown’s tour guide group, the Blue and Gray, for example, has a google form application that asked for a resume in addition to answering their questions, and has a two-round interview. Everyone who did the application got a first-round interview, but not everyone got a second. Again, the competitive clubs are not the majority of clubs at Georgetown (and I still have no idea why Blue and Gray is so insanely popular–almost everyone applies and I honestly don’t see get it lol)
@masquerade98 Thanks for all the information! Yeah, I’ve heard that about the tour group and wondered why it was so popular, haha.
Do you have to keep reapplying to certain clubs every year after gaining membership?
anyone know anything about debate/public speaking at georgetown? do they compete in apda?
@lilypad336 they compete in apda
@justliviglife Usually no. If you’re looking for leadership or cabinet positions, then you may have to, but once you’re in, you’re in. A lot of clubs also do a spring application round so there are plenty of opportunities to apply.
who else is realllllllly nervous? it gets longer as it gets closer… also has anyone called admissions?
I’m extremely nervous, I wish they just emailed the decisions as that would be a lot faster.
@IvyHopeful No one from my school with a 35+ has been rejected in the past few years. I know it varies from school to school, but you have a solid shot. Don’t be too nervous. There’s always RD!
@justliviglife Thanks so much for the kind words! I haven’t seen your stats, but you seem to have a genuine interest in Georgetown and I’m sure they’ll appreciate that.
