Georgetown University Early Action 2014

What did they say? Did they give you an idea why? What region/state? Did it come the same day or after the letter? If they are on the border, it would be great if they give a person another chance to answer a question that may be nagging at the person reviewing the app.

@collegesgirl- he sent it today and i got my deferral monday(in sc). he just said he heard about my deferral and that he still thinks i’d make a good candidate and not be discouraged. i just thought it was odd that he sent it and was wondering if it was a personal thing he felt like sending or what?

mom2collegekids, it’s always easy to second guess the admissions office. I don’t think being full pay makes much difference. Your nephew may have written an essay that someone in the admissions office really liked, or he may have gotten a teacher’s recommendation they loved, or he may have written about something he does outside school that you don’t consider an EC, but they do. For example, my older son did very little in the way of school EC’s, but that’s because he was doing so much computer programming at home. He participated in online contests, taught himself from the MIT open courseware, worked on the mods for a very popular online game (it was listed as Best Mod of the Year in a gaming mag), did some volunteer programming for a professor (and got a fantastic recommendation about the work) and got published for that, and also did extensive freelance work for another company that enabled them to meet a deadline on an important job. No one in school knew about any of this stuff. Some probably thought he was a smart kid with two academic type ECs and nothing else. We didn’t even know about some of the things my son was doing.

You just have to consider it’s the way the cookie crumbles and with a deferral, there’s always the possibility that there will be happy news in April. My son got one EA deferral and one EA acceptance. I think that while the schools are ranked similarly, on paper at least, he’s a much better fit for the school that accepted him.

Eagles17 that’s a great attitude to have. Good luck on the rest of your applications!

Wow. Why would you question your nephew’s acceptance? See it as something wonderful and congratulate him on his amazing opportunity.

parents–get off cC and stop obsessing about your children

the little angels will turn out fine

ahaha…agreed.^

i didn’t apply for financial aid and my stats are as solid as people who were accepted, but i was deferred. i really don’t think applying for financial aid makes a difference. and OUCH, such harsh words to criticize a nephew like that haha

^ This made me rofl. I never thought of that, but you’re probably dead right.

@JRZMom
I remember they told me that during a tour. I didn’t believe it, but I was still paranoid. It makes sense though.

^ walking on what seals?

So Mvingi, when you suggested that people should be civil on this message board, is this what you meant by this post of yours, where you just came out of nowhere to post this?
