Georgetown University Fall 2016 Transfer Thread

Hey y’all - I saw there wasn’t a thread yet for Georgetown Transfer applicants for this fall. I’m not really sure what I hope to do here yet, but I suppose we can all start by sharing our stats and hopefully someone will come by and chance us. If anyone has previously transferred to GU or is a current (transfer or not) student with some advice, please feel free to add to the discussion.

Here’s my stats:

Socioeconomic background: lower/working class

Ethnicity: White

Female

I know GU is “need blind” but I would probably need a significant amount of financial aid

High school:

Extremely large and competitive NJ high school - “Blue ribbon” school - 5000+ students

3.7 GPA

Unsure of class rank (we don’t disclose it to students, only to colleges, but I’d say it’s pretty strong)

College:

Current sophomore at American University (a neighboring DC school)
College GPA: 2.6 (it’s really low due to mental illness/untreated ADHD and a generally rough transition my freshman year. I now have accommodations with the school and this year hope to perform up to my high school standard of an A- average or 3.75). I’m kicking my own ass so I can get straight As all this year. We’ll see how that goes. I have mentioned in my application that I encourage GU to ask for my 2nd semester transcript upon making their decision in July to see if I have truly kept my promise.

SAT (2400): 2110 (610 math, 750 writing & crit. reading)
Have not taken the ACT and considering retaking the SAT. I wouldn’t consider myself an atypical thinker or test taker but I might benefit from more straightforward questions as opposed to the trickery of the SAT lol. Can you even take these tests once you’re in college?

Activities/Accolades:

First generation college student!!!

Ambassador Girl Scout (highest level) with Gold Award (highest possible award)…almost 15 years and still a member.

On the eboard for two campus groups: our sexual assault advocacy and awareness group as well as our mental health/wellness group. Founding member of the mental health group.

On the AU softball team

In high school I was a 4-year member and section leader in our marching band

Avid volunteer for the Washington Humane Society

Strong but random work experience (PR/Creative job at a bridal design company…intern at local historical society…barista…babysitter)

I have strong recommendations in place on both the high school/college level.

Essays will probably be average, hopefully I’ll get to explain my struggles with mental illness and such.

Chance me please!!!

@haileyr210 So I am also a sophomore in college. I applied to transfer into Georgetown MSB for this fall (2015) and unfortunately was led on all the way until August 15th. I received my waitlist decision in June, extended waitlist decision in July and finally my denial for transfer admission in August. I’m guessing this thread is dead because everyone from last year’s thread is still coping with the loss and focusing on the current semester. I knew immediately when I was denied that I would be applying again this year. Georgetown’s issue is their undergraduate enrollment cap which they have agreed upon with the city of D.C.

My older brother graduated from American’s Kogod SoB in 2014 and my cousin graduated from Georgetown Law (after doing undergrad there also) just this year, so I have an inkling of an idea of what it takes to be considered a valuable addition to the D.C. college demographic. I sincerely hope I was denied admission solely on the basis of space.

From your post, I can’t say that there’s anything glaringly out of place other than your GPA which it sounds like you have an explanation for. The big issue for you is going to be how you convince them that you would be better off at Georgetown than American. Both are extremely politically active campuses, with a lot of similarities between the students. I don’t know what about Georgetown has piqued your interest, but you’ll need to make whatever that may be absolutely clear in your application.

I don’t think I was waitlisted twice because there was anything missing in my case for transferring, rather, I think it was just because there were better candidates. I’m not sure if they keep tabs on who comes back to try again during their sophomore year, but I really hope they do. If you don’t mind me asking, why didn’t you apply to transfer this past year?

Holy smokes, I’m surprised to see the transfer thread starting this early. Usually it takes another four months.

I transferred into Georgetown from American U in the fall of 2014, and just began my second (junior) year at Georgetown. All of my info/stats going in are available on the 2014 transfer thread, for which I’ll post the link below. If the OP, or anyone else, wants guidance and/or advice on transferring to Georgetown, I’m happy to give it. In the OP’s case, I can also offer guidance about transferring from AU specifically. Feel free to DM me!

Really looking at Georgetown as a school I want to transfer to in the fall. I’m completely miserable here at the University of Miami and was wondering if anybody who transferred in to Georgetown could share their experiences with the transfer process and what life is like for a transfer student at Georgetown.

I’m here at Virginia Tech and am also quite miserable, I wish you all the best!

Rising Junior (for Fall 2016) @ big ten school.
HS GPA: 3.2
SAT: 1680

Freshman year: 4.0, 19 credit hours
One month into sophomore year, still 4.0.
HS EC: MUN President, Class President, Charity Computer Building Club President, Nonpartisan political discussion club president, founder of statewide student advisory panel for one of my state’s agencies
College EC: Vice President of dorm (freshman year), President of dorm (soph year), Model UN Vice President, Dorm student conduct board

I know two professors who I can get great recs from.

Really, I feel like I’ll get immediately denied because of high school. But there’s so many non-academic factors, at least in my opinion, that explain why it is subpar.

thoughts?

@collegeappstory @diefjejc Why do you describe your situations as miserable? I guess I assumed that UofMiami and VT were awesome places to go to school.

Hey all,

I’m a freshman at the college of William and Mary looking to apply for GUSFS. High school I graduate with a 3.9 unweighted/ 4.1 weighted (weights were low at my school despite taking every AP).
1920 SATs, 710 US history, 550 Spanish, 740 literature
High school ECs: MUN team president, class president, intern at the world affairs council, intern at NATO, won every cumulative/ quantitative award for my high school’s academic programs, multiple MUN awards, also started a model un conference from the ground up for my senior project with a total of 200 delegates and wrote a dissertation on how supranational organizations are challenged with adapting to a shifting security paradigm/ why. I also did the NSLIY China summer program, Spanish for 6 years and Chinese for 4.

Currently at William and Mary I am doing well and incredibly involved with our international relations club, as the only freshman crisis director for our upcoming high school conference, I am an assistant director for the national High School Model UN conference (largest high school conference in the world), I am involved with Haven, our sexual assault information/counseling center, and I am the only freshman selected for research with our Psychology and Practice of International Relations program with my friend.

I am looking to transfer to Georgetown because I genuinely believe they made a mistake not accepting me the first time around when I applied to SFS. While William and Mary is a top institution and highly competitive (especially rivaling Ivies with our international relations program and language programs), I just can’t picture myself not being in DC. I visited DC during the Georgetown IRC’s NCSC conference this year for model un, and just being in the city reminded me of what I want and what I’ve always wanted. Being constantly surrounded by the epicenter of international politics (debatable but not really) would be the best thing for me as it would continue to motivate me to reach my goal. I love william and Mary and all the friends I have made here, but it is quiet. I need nightlife, I need somewhere I can do things without a car. I need ample access to internships and inspiration. Also, a campus whose cobblestones won’t mess up my heels (William and Mary hasnt replaced its cobblestones since the school opened in 1693 it’s a bit of a struggle looking fabulous every day)

Georgetown just seems to be the place to be and ideally I would like to know if anyone thinks I should retake my SATs. Thanks!

Hey guys,

I’m a current freshman at Salisbury University. However, I was hoping to transfer to a school that is larger and also has a closer proximity to a larger city. So far I have already completed my Georgetown Transfer Application. I really hope I get in here! Oh also, one of the reasons I wanted transfer to Georgetown was because of their Army ROTC program.

I was also wondering if I should retake my SAT. I didnt do that great but I still managed to get into Salisbury and George Mason. I got a 1700. I heard people say that the ACT is easier so should I take that instead?

@Jacob4815162342 do you mind sharing your stats, considering you progressed very far in the process?

HS GPA: 3.9
SAT: 2100
ACT: 31
Current College GPA ~ 3.8
I really don’t think this will tell you anything important though. As long as you have a valid reason for wanting to transfer, they should be open to hearing whatever your specific case is I think.

I’m majoring in finance while minoring in Russian, Spanish, and economics at big state u. Applying to some reaches as well this year; I really want to experience my last two years at a school where the students are really there to learn. Where do I see myself in 5 years? : Investment banking in Moscow or Skolkovo.

@Jacob4815162342 impressive. Georgetown superscores ACT and SAT right?

Never mind

@Kraz4CocoPuffs I don’t think they superscore… I could be wrong. My superscore SAT is a 2210. I can’t remember by ACT superscore off the top of my head.

Hey everyone,
I’m a current freshman at American University.
Here are my stats.
High school:
GPA: 3.6 (low because of mental illness)
SATS: 1530/1600 (CR - 780 Math - 750) As far as I know they don’t look at writing, right?
College:
GPA: 3.8-4.0 for first semester as long as finals go alright.
Currently a member of two competitive programs, one research and the other leadership based.
Next semester I’ll be serving on e board of AU’s Queers and Allies club.

But my strengths are in my resume:
4+ years of consistently working on the pediatric floor of inner city hospital
Spent my junior year of high school studying abroad in a Latin American country
Took a gap year and worked for an AmeriCorps program
Worked at a camp for inner city girls over the summer, lead leadership workshops and other programming
Currently working in a DC charter school with GED students

I’m worried about my GPA and lack of involvement in HS, but I’m hoping I’ll be able to explain why I did so poorly in high school in an essay or interview and that my academic improvement and involvement in activities will speak louder than my HS transcript.

Just wanted to know what other people might think of my chances. Thanks!

@Jacob4815162342 @Kraz4CocoPuffs Georgetown superscores the SATs (but does not looking at the Writing section, so it would be out of 1600, not 2400). Georgetown does not superscore the individual sections of the ACT.

In any case, standardized test scores are significantly less important for transfer admissions than they are for first-year admissions.

@haileyr210 Im going to go out on a limb here and say most likely no. I think your GPA is what is your largest hindrance. Because your climbing tiers of schools, georgetown is a progression up the academic ladder. Everything else seems fine but since you have struggled at your previous institution i imagine they will not accept you into a more of a competitive one. That just my opinion i may be wrong but i think your gap needs to improve then you will have chance.

@nighthawk4 you sound like a shoe in. i doubt you have a problem getting accepted if you can keep your Gpa above a 3.8 from a large state university you should be fine (and your a junior high school GPA and SAT are kinda irrelevant).

Hi all,
So this is a transfer admission question ! I am currently as sophomore at a well regarded North Carolina university (accounting major ),i have a 3.867 college gpa.
I have good EC’s( debate team, varsity ski team, improv, etc…) and good letters. would someone chance me ?
Thanks in advance,
PS: i didn’t include much high school stuff seems redundant, because i am applying as a junior. But i was an above average student took AP’s so on and so forth.
