Georgetown University Fall 2016 Transfer Thread

@cacpua7 Georgetown likes a no-bullsh*t essay. You can’t dodge the really big things: service to society and the jesuit catholic foundation for thought.

Hi guys! How many of your are from private universities? Any community college students here? Does Georgetown U except community college students as well? Also, what grade are y’all in?

I’m from American University, so it’s private. And yes, they do accept students from community colleges. I’m a freshman.
I have a question fo everyone. I just got invited to apply for the Honors Program at the Kogod Business School at American. Is that a positive or detrimental characteristic to add to my application as I finalize it?

Is it possible you could tell me if I have a chance I could get in? I am worried I am wasting my time. I am a student at the Kogod School of Business at American University. I am majoring in Finance. I am a freshman.

My first semester ended and my GPA is a 3.87 (3 A’s and 2 A-'s) . My essays are following what you told me. is it possible you could see if i have a chance?

Courses: Fall 2015
Applied Calc I: A
Business 1.0: A
Visual Literacy: A
Drawing: A-
College Writing: A-

Spring 2016
Tools of Financial Markets
College Writing Seminar
Business Statistics
Views from Global South
Financial Accounting
Global Corporate Citizenship

I expect a 4.0 this semester (spring)

I have a recommendation from my business professor, who I am close to.
My extra curricular activities include:
-high school investment club founder and president

  • treasurer of student government for 2 years
  • Financial Management Association at the university
  • soon to be summer intern at the department of treasury- office of financial research
  • I am planning on starting my own investment club at the University also next semester
  • took an entrepreneurship course as a junior in high school at the University of Maryland
  • treasurer of UNICEF club
  • worked in retail for 4 years as a technology specialist
  • getting an on-campus job next semester
  • Bloomberg Certified
  • top 1% portfolio in capitol hill challenge (virtual stock exchange game)

My essay for MSB involves me talking about taking down corruption in my high school.

My high school stats were:
3.62GPA (UW) 4.25 (W)
SAT: 1820 (Math: 650, Reading: 610, Writing: 560).

I am worried my high school statistics will murder me. Could you give me advice on how i could get in? My reasoning for leaving kogod is: i want a better social atmosphere (one that is more intelligent) and I want to be taking a more rigorous curriculum, unlike what kogod has to offer.

Can we include high school resume when transferring to other university?

@beaglee105 pretty sure it’s required along with the secondary school report

@beaglee105 thought you said transcript. My bad

Let me jump in on this as I finish my application. Can anyone chance me as well?
I wanna major in international political economy (SFS). I’m currently majoring in economics.

College:
UCF (Ranked ~150, largest undergraduate enrollment in the nation)
GPA: 4.0
SAT: CR:760 M:670

EC’s:
Research Chair at the Student Handbook Review Committee: Authored a medical amnesty policy proposal for drug abuse cases. Co-authored other proposals.
SGA Justice: Member of the Student Conduct Board, Grade Appeals Board, Citation Appeals Board and Election Violation Appeals Court. Vice Chair of our mentorship program.
Volunteer coordinator at school’s volunteering agency: 250+ community service hours. Planned and executed 7 events. Lead several events with up to 30 volunteers.
Intern at Business Litigation Firm: Mainly did administrative work and became acquainted with legal research.
Western Equestrian Team: Exactly what it sounds like! We compete in western horsemanship competitions (cowboy outfits included lol). Placed first in the beginner category at a state competition. Volunteered at the special olympics handling horses, and have done other volunteer and philanthropy work with them as well.

I thought my EC’s were good until I saw some of yours!

My reasons to transfer are that my academic interests aren’t being met where I currently am, and that my school doesn’t have the resources for me to be able to have a career in government and politics. I don’t know how compelling these arguments are, though I believe I structured them rather well.

Oh by the way, my main concern is my letter of recommendation. My professor doesn’t really know me that well (Did I mention the student to faculty ratio is ridiculously high?) and English is not his first language, so my recommendation will in all likelihood very generic. He did tell me I was his best student in that class, but I don’t know if he mentioned that.

At this point I’m almost spamming you guys so I apologize, but does anyone know if we can switch majors within the same school in the case that we are accepted? I’m really having trouble deciding between international political economy and international history!

Hi all! I just finished my application (oops)! What are my chances?

High School:
GPA: 3.96 UW, 4.212 W
Class Rank: 2/553
ACT: 35 (didn’t take SAT)
Many AP scores (all 4’s and 5’s)
Extracurriculars: NHS, managed volleyball team, Eco Team, lots of volunteer work

College:
University of Notre Dame First-Year
GPA: 3.778 (dean’s list)
Member of three political clubs on campus, Model UN, have a part time job, competitive Mock Trial, tutor in a struggling neighbourhood in South Bend

I’m a PoliSci major currently but I want to work with Environmental Policy in the EPA after law school. I have a lot of enviro experience from high school and this year and interned with a judge last summer.

I think my essays were pretty good but really long. I am not sure about my letter of rec, but he seems to like me. I just hope it won’t be a generic rec.

I applied last year and was put on the extended waitlist (lack of uniqueness/ not great essays). Very good interview.

Just wanted to see what you all think!

just got invited for an interview with admissions, anyone else?

@Jacob4815162342 hi! Could you possibly chance me for MSB also? It seems like you have a lot of insight and I would be very grateful for your input

@frenchie2729 me too!

@frenchie2729 , @olivergr you guys got an interview!? congrats! are you guys in the DC area? and when did you submit your application?

@hershey789 I submitted my application at the end of November/ beginning of December. I am in the New York Metropolitan area, so the interview would be conducted here by a former Alumni and then the report gets sent back to Georgetown

@hershey789 Exactly what frenchie said. I’m in the Seattle area, and it’s an interview with a local Georgetown alumni

@frenchie2729 @olivergr ah! thats interesting. i am in the DC area, sent my app in January so maybe itll be per area. thank you!

I wish you guys best of luck!

@hershey789 you’re lookin’ good, don’t worry about high school stats when you’ve already proven your abilities in college. i like your chances, but MSB is rough. let’s just wait and see.

When will we be notified if anything is missing? I’m nervous to see if my application is completed and all documents received.
