**Georgetown University Offical Transfer Thread 2008**

Plus, two of my professors still haven't posted grades for this semester!!! I need to send a final transcript as soon as possible right?

No fin aid for me at Georgetown, because I am an international student :(

I am an international student as well. I was wondering if taking out a $70,000 loan to attend Georgetown is really a sound decision. Will I be in debt for the rest of my life if I do this?

azzip: if you go to law school after walsh, you will have a lot more debt. But, remember that you can easily pay them back in 10 years as a lawyer given that you go to a top 10 law school. And law schools LOVE walsh students.

I think it's quite an investment.

Azzip, personally, I had set my mind that I would go to state school rather than taking out even $10,000 a year. International student loan interest rates are higher and you need US citizens that cosigns for you. If you are motivated in the long run and 100% sure that you will get into law school and earn high income, then you might be able to afford entertaining the thought of taking out loans.

anyone heard anything back recently?

Thanks man, I appreciate it! In regards to the full-tuition scholarship to maryland, I recieved the award because I was a winner in a very competitive scholarship application process. THe scholarship is called the Transfer Academic Excellence Scholarship (you can look it up at the UMD webpage), and this scholarship is award to 12 community college students (well this year it was 12) who are planning to transfer to UMD. There is a thorough application process (almost like college admission adcoms). I remember the application for the scholarship to be exactly like applying to another college. By the way, you need to apply to UMD separately. I think for me, the reason I got this scholarship was because of my academics, club involvement and sports.

For my academics, I got a 3.96 as a biochemistry major (@ Montgomery College), got dean's list all 4 semesters, asian academic awards, Phi Theta Kappa, was a candidate for the USA all-academic team, part of the Montgomery Scholars program (look it up in the internet or wikipeida), honor scholars award, attended the University of Cambridge during the summer,

For clubs, I was founder and president of the Pre-med society, member and traditional dancer for the filipino-american club, a Montgomery College Ambassador, club member of the year for pre-med society,

For sports, I have been on the Montgomery College tennis team my entire time here. My first year, I was first singles. My second year, I was promoted to captain and we made it to nationals. Our team won 2nd place in the nation and I won an 1st team All-American doubles award.

I know this is A LOT of stuff, and I know for a fact that you do not need to do all this stuff in order to get the scholarship. For example, my friend (whose GPA is below 3.4) got this scholarship as well. I believe what got him the scholarship was his involvement outside of school (he didn't join any clubs or sports, but was VERY involved with his church) and he effectively conveyed how going to maryland on this scholarship will help further his carrer goals in his essay. By the way, I think the big essay for the application is:

Describe a problem that you feel truly care about (local, state, national, international). How is going to maryland going to help you solve this problem?

For me, as an aspiring doctor, I chose the international problem of infectious diseases. In this globalizing world, where people and food and travel anywhere and at anytime, the threat of a globalizing infectious disease pandemic is much more imminent today than it was 100 years ago. I was planning to be an infectious disease specialist and travel the world via doctors without borders or the WHO.

wow, that was a lot of typing, sorry about that. ANyways, I chose not to accept the scholarship because I believe my academic pursuits lie closely to that of Georgetown University.

I live in north potomac, MD and I play tennis too! haha, we should play. Good luck with everything man and just PM if you have more questions.

last minute decision, I will be attending!! I'm really excited!!

Now... I haven't received my grades for last semester yet. What do you think it would take to get admissions rescinded? I recall from H.S. that admissions committee were generally really loose and overlooked B's and maybe even a C (although they sometimes sent warning letters). Do they deal with transfers similarlY?

I had nearly a 4.0 when I applied, but this semester I think I will have something like two A-'s, a B+, and a B. Would a B- be dangerous?

^ congrats! and nooo...a B- is fine. don't stress.

Is anyone still waiting for a decision? I've been patiently waiting but I don't know what is going on. I applied to MSB...

I'm still waiting for a decision and at this point I'm assuming a rejection letter is in the near future. But congratulations to all of you that got in :)

Me too. I keep asking my doormen everyday if they get a letter from Gtown. It would be so embarrassing when I finally receive one and get rejected. I submitted my application <5 mins before the deadline.

alpharosean: you have personal doormen?! hahaha... why did you not like Yale btw? You didn't like the neighborhood?

I got into SFS - international economics.

What's better - Georgetown or Rice?

accepted! I am literally bouncing around. I was NOT expecting this at all. Got in as a psych major.

Also, I know that the college seemed to do do their decisions by major/program. My acceptance letter said that I was admitted to my program of choice. Does that mean that I'm bound to being a psych major even though I am a soph transfer? I only ask because one of the reasons that I was waffling on another school I was accepted to was because I basically couldn't change my major. My academic plans have been prone to go in new directions and being locked into a major would make an impact on whether or not I decide to go to Georgetown.

sa736: Congratulations. Are you attending SFS this fall? If so, what other schools are you turning down in order to attend SFS?

HoosforGTown: Yes I'll most likely be attending SFS. I'll have to turn WashU down. I still haven't heard from Johns Hopkins and Wesleyan. I'll hear from Wesleyan on Monday, and Johns Hopkins by the end of the month.

BTW Does anyone know if its to double major with something outside of SFS? I want to double major in IECO (or IPEC) and Mathematics.

HoosforGTown,
Oh, don't be silly :)
I don't know... but I know that "New Haven" is not right for me. I'll visit Yale again with my mother on monday. Let's see what she thinks.
What about Georgetown? You live nearby, don't you? I've never been there before but I think DC is more sophisticated. At least I can shop on weekends, and nice restaurants.
