Hey guys! I had a question regarding the essay prompts and was wondering if someone could help me out? I wanted to know what exactly the prompts are for the first and second essay and I had a question about the first essay. Please PM me!!
Anyone know if there’s a significant difference in the admissions rates for Georgetown College/McDonough/School of Foreign Service? I’m interested in the International Political Economy and Business program within McDonough, but I could easily swing to Econ in the college or International Political Economy in Foreign Service.
Applied to Georgetown on a whim but who knows maybe I’ll see y’all there lol. I go to a New Jersey community college and I’m getting my biology associate degree in May. The reason I chose to apply to Georgetown is because I love DC!
I’m applying to transfer from GW Elliot to GU SFS. My GPA and SAT are both good but unfortunately I’m having trouble with the first essay. There’s nothing interesting or diverse about me other than that I’m gay but that hasn’t come with any struggles.
I had so much trouble with the first essay right off the bat. Eventually I decided on writing about how I have always been considered “different” because of a birthmark on my face and related it to taking a different path in college by choosing to transfer! It took a while to nail that down, but I think sitting down and writing what makes me “me” really helped. It’s so cheesy but I swear it made duh a difference!
I actually really enjoyed writing the first essay because I got to talk about how unique I really am. Getting the chance to show them what sets me apart from everyone else is definitely more fun to write than a “what do you want to do with your degree?” kind of essay.
Hey all - current Georgetown sophomore and recent transfer here. Randomly saw this thread and just want to say that I was in your shoes last year, browsing through college confidential as I wrote up my Georgetown App and wondered whether I would be lucky enough to attend my dream school. If anyone has any questions about the process, my stats, why I think I got in, etc. I’m happy to share. Feel free to shoot me a dm for specifics.
Also, is anyone else having trouble with the application supplement portal saving your “entry term consideration” choice? I have completed the supplement in its entirety and it still has a warning on the submission page reminding me to choose a matriculation term… suggestions? I have logged out, refreshed the page, gone through the supplement page by page, and nothing has worked!
Hi taylor99! I have the same issue, and I came here looking for an answer to this as well. I tried logging on from different computers (mac/windows) and my mobile phone etc, but nothing worked. I called the office and they said that I should still be able to submit it (I did not try to submit it yet). I thought I should wait a bit for this glitch to go away because I am also done with my application. Not sure what to do as the deadline is approaching… Please let us know if anyone has the same issue or solved this problem. Thanks!
@taylor99 my stats when I applied were as follows:
College GPA: 3.93/4.0
Old SAT: 2260, Math: 780 Reading 760 Writing 720
Subject Tests: 790 BioM, 780 Literature, 760 Math I
College ECs: student-run investment fund, consulting club, violinist in university orchestra, and worked part-time on campus. Nothing too crazy or outstanding, just solid involvement in line with my interests.
I applied to McDonough as a finance major; the majority of coursework at my previous school was econ and music courses (I was a music/econ double major).
As for high school stats, they weren’t horrible but weren’t amazing either. 3.7/4.0 GPA, 5 AP’s (scored all 4’s and 5’s), bunch of music ECs, lab-research experience and a few honor societies. Also held one or two leadership positions. Again, decent but no major hooks.
One thing that’s unique about my situation was that I had applied to the college in high school and gotten on the extended wait-list. Can’t confirm whether that bit of history impacted their decision but it might’ve showed committed interest in Georgetown. I believe that it was a combination of my strong college GPA, demonstrated interest in Georgetown, and compelling narrative explaining the reasons behind transferring that ultimately got me in.
Does anyone when the reccomendation letters are due? I know the supplement is due on the 1st but it says only the requests need to be made by March 1, not that the letters need to be in by then.
@Kd6410 it doesn’t have to be something inherent about you. I wrote about a unique EC/job that I have. It can be anything — I’m sure there’s something you do/love that most people around you don’t give a second thought to. Just try to pinpoint that and then think about how that thing has affected you. Has it given you a new perspective on something? did it lead to some life-changing personal discovery?
I wanted to jump in an introduce myself, and shoot off a quick ‘chance me’ request.
I am an active duty member the the Navy, currently on my ship’s spring patrol in the Asia-Pacific region.
I currently am a student with the University of Maryland University College (online). I want to transfer into the School of Foreign Service.
Quick overview of my stats:
3.82 GPA W/a total of 56 credits earned, (not including 6 military LL credits).
32 Composite ACT
Poor HS grades in challenging classes, owing from life events. I took classes like AP Chem, but only performed well in classes like AP US or GOV. This was expressed in one of my essays.
Experience:
Served in the military for the past 3 and a half years - on sea duty in a challenging area of operations.
Some Intelligence Community work via the Navy.
Think Tank/ Policy Experience via a Japan-based, American think tank. The think tank covers mainly economic, political, legal, and defense topics as they relate to the Asia-Pacific - with an emphasis on the US-Japan bilateral relation and defense topics. I have interned with them for coming on two years, and participated in a series of events as a junior/visiting fellow.
Summer internship w/ State Senator’s Office in HS.
I think my essays are very strong, play to the SFS’s mission, and highlight my current service and intent to make an impact in the world.
Looking forward to waiting until June with all of you,
Best of luck,
Redacted
@Redacted1 Your GPA is around what their average for acceptance is so that’s great. I’m not sure how to interpret ACT scores because I didn’t take the ACT. I think your work experience in particular is what makes you a strong candidate. I don’t think AP Chem really matters to SFS as much as AP US and Gov would. I’m applying to the regular college for biology so I don’t have much knowledge about SFS but you seem to have a lot to offer experience-wise. Good luck!
