Georgetown vs. GWU

Which of the aforementioned schools is better? There are certainly pros and cons to both, but taking into account cost, location, post-grad opportunities, quality of education etc., which is superior? I’m truly torn between the two and I would like insight from those who have it… Thanks in advance!

Too general a questions: better for what? Georgetown has a generally more ‘prestigious’ name (and is higher ranked by USNWR). Both are expensive. Both will prepare you extremely well for a variety of post-grad paths and give you the opportunity to get a first rate education (though you have to do your part to actually get the education.

Have you visited both? They are so different but you’d get a great education at either. I’d suggest turning the question around and asking “which is better for you” given the environment you’d most desire.

Good luck!

The question you need to ask is “Which is better for me?” Although they are both in DC GW and Gtown are different schools. Do your research, visit if possible, see where you get in, see how the finances work out for both schools and then decide. Nobody can or should answer this for you.

With respect to undergrad education, when it comes to colleges, it comes down to three key things…academics, community, career outcomes. While GW is a good school, I believe Georgetown wins on all three. For example, Georgetown offers lower student-faculty ratio, has a campus, and more career options/outcomes.

But that’s the thing, @fivesages: to you those things- and the way that you define them- are what matters. But who knows if they are the same for the OP?

For example, an enclosed campus isn’t important to lots of students.

Nor would I equate student-faculty ratio with better academics- particularly when the difference is 13:1 v 11:1- not a staggering difference.

Finally, I would be interested in how you quantified that Georgetown has “more career options/outcomes”- I don’t see how that would be true.

So, back to you, @cboo3: what is important to you

@collegemom3717 I didn’t say GW is not a good school. I just answered OP’s question…“There are certainly pros and cons to both, but taking into account cost, location, post-grad opportunities, quality of education etc., which is superior?”. With respect to your question about “more career options/outcomes”…for example, top wall street firms and consulting firms have on-campus recruiting at Georgetown, not at GW. While there is no one perfect school for anyone, a very few people would choose GW over Georgetown for undergrad if given both options…especially given Georgetown’s financial aid is usually at or above GW’s. It’s very much like Columbia and NYU. Both are good schools, but a very few choose NYU over Columbia. Again, I am not saying no one chooses.

I know (recent) GWU grads who say that is factually not true.

I’m not disagreeing with you overall- just that your metrics (and your opinion as to how the schools score on those metrics) are simply the ones that are important to you- not universal truths.
