Hey all!
just wondering the differences between International relations at Hopkins and International Relations at Georgetown. Georgetown is definitely more of a reach for me than Johns Hopkins (it would be one or the other for early) and the one thing that will set one before the other for me is the strength of their IR programs.

[international relations undergraduate program rankings - Google Search](<a href=“international relations undergraduate program rankings - Google Search”>international relations undergraduate program rankings - Google Search)

Hopkins undergrad program is ranked kind of in the middle of the pack, but honestly, rankings don’t matter that much. If you graduate from Hopkins with a degree in IR, you will get a job. That said, Georgetown is a step up.

if you are really serious about IR, you should consider Hopkins because you can do a program where in 5 years you get your BA and MS, and the MS is from SAIS, the most well regarded masters program in the country. You’d be pretty much set.

in the end, they are both great schools though Georgetown has a better location for internships on the Hill. but just go with the one that feels better to you; you literally can’t go wrong.

The programs are different but both are excellent. Georgetown’s Walsh SFS is one of the few professional IR schools which admits undergraduates (GW’s Elliot School and AU’s SIS do as well). Hopkins’ SAIS is just a graduate school, except for the few admitted to the joint BA/BA program. International Studies as an undergraduate major at Hopkins, unlike Georgetown, is a liberal arts interdisciplinary program run by the Political Science Department. It is not a “professional” program like SAIS or SFS. But you will receive an excellent education and it is very respected in the field. My son got his BA in IS and was hired for a think tank job which required a MA–only because he went to JHU. He is now in a top Ph.D program.

Try to go visit both and see which you like best. I can vouch that the students are VERY different at each school.

Wealth, what sets the students at Georgetown apart?

GU is a Jesuit institution, that’s the biggest difference between JHU as universities. And, what Hopkins is to medicine, Georgetown is to government. Most students at both schools work very hard in class, and many at both schools go into the professions after getting advanced degrees.

Most GU students from the US went to prep schools (Bradley and Buffy types), and many of the international students are from wealthy, “connected” families. Overall, GU students are better looking and more fun to be around (Party-on dude!) than those at Hopkins; but there are more GU students that are stuck up, haughty, and aloof.
