Georgetown vs. Macaulay Hunter

So I got into both schools, and I'm conflicted. I have yet to receive financial aid information for Georgetown, and that will likely make the decision for me. I am attending both Accepted Students days as well.

I kind of applied to both schools on a whim. I got wait listed at Wesleyan, which was probably my first choice, but I'm still happy to have both of these great options. I am undecided about my major, but will probably go into political science, but definitely something in the social sciences or liberal arts.

So Macaulay is a great program. It's free, has the cultural passport which provides free admission to top museums, plays and other cultural events in the city, free laptop, and $7500 opportunities grant. I have a bunch of friends that live in the city already as well. I loveeee the city, and it's really important to me to be there. I got into NYU as well, but it's financial aid package obviously was not doable, so Macaulay beat that out definitely. I also love the program of Macualay, putting students out in the city to get life experience and they become cultured and well rounded people. Also, Macaulay students get advanced class registration. My only qualms are a) name recognition, as in do grad schools know about this program, or do they just treat it like normal Hunter? And b) I'd be worried if most classes are normal Hunter classes, but are most Macaulay-only classes or Hunter Honors Classes?

And then there's Georgetown. I was deferred EA and never had an emotional connection here. I never visited, and I completely wrote it off because it's so hard to get into, so I was shocked when I actually did get in! It's obviously an amazing school, and has a great political science program. My only thing about it is that it's not in NYC, which was really important to me, and that it's probably going to cost a lot, compared to Macaulay's $0 price tag. That is pretty hard to beat.

My qualms about Macaulay and the financial aid package and overall atmosphere at Georgetown are all the things now that I plan to find out at Accepted Students Day which will ultimately help me make my decision. But for now does anyone have any input? Thanks for your help!

anyoneeeee I just got my Georgetown financial aid and it would be $30000ish to go there

$30,000 a year? Macaulay is the obvious choice.

Just out of curiosity, are you from out of state and still familiar with the Macaulay program?

If money isn’t an issue, I would recommend Georgetown. Georgetown is very strong for political science. Also DC is an amazing city.

Help me with my decision.

I’m very familiar with Macaulay (accepted to Macaulay Hunter).

I wouldn’t say that money is an ISSUE, but it’s definitely something to be considered. I could get by on that $30,000 a year and be okay, but I’d still be in debt. Going into grad school, I’m not sure this decision is worth it

@firstgenn okay yay, it’s a great program, really my only qualm is how it’s not that well known. Hmmm I’m so conflicted.

If you’re looking into Law School (which I’d assume based off Pol Sci) then going into $120,000 of debt is a bad way to start off the already expensive endeavor to a career in law. While going to Georgetown would definitely be better for your admissions to Law School, it’s not a difference worth going into debt for.

[Undergraduate Colleges](http://www.law.harvard.edu/prospective/jd/apply/undergrads.html)

As you can see, plenty of students who attend Harvard Law (top 3) have gone to undergraduate institutions which aren’t exactly prestigious. Get a good GPA, kill the LSAT (most important) and your undergrad won’t be as big of a deal as you’d think.

I’m not really sure about law school because I’m not 100% sure about my major yet, but if not that than definitely another type of grad school, which is almost equally as expensive.

I just almost wish I didn’t get into Georgetown at this point, and I hope that everyone will be supportive if I end up choosing Macaulay. People get wayyyy too caught up in the name! It’s very hard to overcome

I know exactly how you feel. It’s a tough dilemma no doubt, but you really have to do what you feel is right (as cliche as it sounds). Name and prestige are awesome to have at first, but like everything, the feelings of elation subside, and you certainly don’t want to face a mountain of debt without having properly prepared for it.

Best of luck :)

Thanks so much, you’ve been a lot of help!!
