I got into all three schools and the honors program at Boston College. I am looking to be a Biology major with a pre-med track. I have no idea which school to go to someone please help me. I am most worried about being so far from home at notre dame and being in the middle of nowhere. At Georgetown I’m gonna wish I had that football atmosphere and I feel like it isn’t a lot of fun. I also feel like ruling out Boston College because I don’t think it compares academically to the other two but I do love the city of Boston. Somebody please help
If you plan to be a premed, go to the college which gives you the best chance of getting into medical school!
My daughter is premed at Notre Dame. It has been a fantastic experience and we all agree it was the best decision of her life. She did have the same concerns you do about being far from home and in the “middle of nowhere”, but she has had such a great time there, those quickly became non-issues! And it’s not really in the middle of nowhere. South Bend may not be a booming metropolis, but there is plenty to do on and around campus. And Chicago is just a quick train-ride away. Notre Dame is a really fun school, a very warm and friendly community, great academics, and just an all-around very special place. If I were choosing a college for myself right now, I would pick ND over any other school!
I would visit each becuase they each have a unique environment. Georgetown and BC are in urban areas with fantastic campuses. ND is in a rural area but also has a fantastic campus. I would be pretty bored in Indiana, but if that is your thing, then ND is a fantastic school. If you would rather live in a big city, you should lean more towards BC and Georgetown.
What is the cost differential? These are all fairly similar schools so if one is substantially cheaper than the other, I would go with that option.
@n1j2b9: Can I ask you what your final decision was?
Boston College is a university & a mostly selective one at that. They like Georgetown are Jesuit schools & a bit more liberal than strict Roman Catholic. ND is moving away from its catholic roots.
My wife has visited all three and says ND is by far the most Catholic. By the numbers as best I can tell, Notre Dame is 80% Catholic, BC 70%, and Georgetown 50%. I would say ND is not moving all that far from its Catholic roots.
Gtown not fun?! Most people I know from my generation (I’m a parent) to those of my Ds (both in undergrad) really enjoy the social scene which is at once diverse and cosmopolitan. And while certainly not a football powerhouse, their basketball program is legendary.
if this is a sort of Catholic showdown, Notre Dame wins in the Catholicity department and is up there with Georgetown when it comes to academics. Georgetown is sort of like… a Catholic university but only if you want them to be, maybe, they don’t know, they just don’t want to offend anyone you know??? lol and that kind of attitude sort of annoys me. BC is pretty Catholic too, though, and a great school as well (but going downhill I believe).
Holy Cross would be another option for students seeking top Catholic schools. ND, HC, and Georgetown have been National schools for well over 100 years. Notre Dame and Holy Cross have much stronger alumni networks(imo) based on alumni giving rates > 50%. Gtown and Boston College trail big-time in giving rates.
