Georgetown vs. NYU

Hey, so I'm trying to decide between Georgetown and NYU. A few things:

I'm interested in a political science and economics double major. I'm planning on going to law school, but after four years, it's always possible that I may change my mind.

I know that Georgetown undergrads don't have to take the LSAT to apply to GULC, and that would really be reassuring during law school applications. But NYU Law School is a higher tier school and I wonder if NYU undergrads have an advantage there.

The biggest thing pulling me toward NYU is that I'm gay, and NYU seems like it would be much more gay-friendly college. I also love the idea of living in the middle of NYC for college. Everything is just right there.

On the other hand, I've always had a passion for politics and DC has alot to offer in the area.

I know this is the Georgetown board, but tell me what you guys think.
Thanks!

Both schools are tolerant. If you want the Village, go to NYU - but Georgetown has its points too. If you do well at either of those school, you should not have a problem getting into a good law school.

A few thoughts (from my perspective, and therefore necessarily subjective), take them as you will:
At the undergrad level, GU is a much stronger school than NYU. (The latter’s reputation is very good; the former’s is excellent.)
I personally believe that a real campus adds a lot to the overall feel and atmosphere of a college. GU has a great campus; NYU doesn’t really have one. (But, as you note, the Village is an amazing place to hang out.)
I suspect that both will be more than fine for the majors you indicate, especially at the undergrad level.
You say that NYU’s law school is a “higher tier” than GU’s. Actually, they are both in the “T14” (the top 14 law schools that have been the top 14 for decades). Yes, NYU’s law school is rated higher within the T14; no question.
DC and NYC are both fabulous cities. It’s purely a question of what offerings of each city appeal to you more personally.
I have no knowledge about the “gay friendly” issue, but my instincts tell me that NYU is going to rank higher on that scale.

I’m still in high school so I can’t attest to the gay-friendliness of Georgetown or NYU, but I do live right outside DC and I go to Georgetown (the part of DC, not the school) almost every weekend to go to hookah bars, restaurants, etc with friends (there’s sooo much to do there). I can assure you that DC in general (especially the area GU is in) is VERY gay-friendly.
Also, if you’re a political person, there’s no place better than DC. Honestly, everyone who lives in or around this city is very politically aware (and the vast, VAST majority are liberal). Going to hookah bars with my friends almost always entails intense political discussions, especially once the buzz from the hookah lightens things up (and these are high school kids, mind you. people here are raised to be politically active).
I would say personality-wise, you belong in DC. Academics-wise, it’s pretty objective: GU is better undergrad, NYU is better for law school.

And btw, on top of the atmosphere of the city, I can tell you that the DC Big 3 (GU, AU, GW) have reputations for being very left-leaning and gay-friendly, but this is something I haven’t been able to witness first-hand.

Speaking on the gay issue; Georgetown is incredibly liberally. I grew up in a conservative catholic family and can attest to that. Likewise, Dupont is the neighborhood adjacent to Georgetown and happens to be on of the most prominent ‘gay neighborhoods’ in the country. LGBT events are apparent on campus.

At Georgetown you won’t be in the middle of everything like NYU but you can get to it with ease. Also, if financial aid is a factor Georgetown is a better choice.

Best of luck!

bump…
