Georgetown vs. Tufts vs. Northeastern Honors

Okay so immediately most of you will probably be questioning why I’m highly considering Northeastern Honors vs the two aforementioned schools. So here’s my spiel: I don’t qualify for financial aid and I’m in that situation where I’m most definitely going to law/grad school which will be extremely expensive. So, Georgetown (which I do like a bit more than Tufts for the location but a bit less for the supposed preppy/competitive atmosphere) and Tufts will be the full 70k a year (yikes). Meanwhile, northeastern gave me a ton of money in merit scholarships, making it quite a bit cheaper.

I’m a prospective IR major (I got into the SFS at Georgetown) and I know gtown and tufts are amazing in that program. My question is if it’s worth the ~30k extra a year to attend either of those. I love the co ops and the modernness of northeastern, but of course NEU is no GU or tufts. Also as for the environments: I’m that kind of person that’s pretty chill and adaptable and I’ve heard the stereotypes about each of the schools (especially gtown) but I’m waiting for GAAP weekend to fully make my judgement.

Thanks everyone!

If that extra $30,000/year will be parental loans go with Northeastern. If your parents are wealthy then it is not a concern.

Your initial sentence though tells me that your opinion of Northeastern is not well informed.

@TomSrOfBoston oh I believe I’m very well informed of northeastern. It’s been on the up swing and has a lot to offer academically and career-wise, I was just taking subtle jabs at some other people in these recent weeks who have scoffed at me as to why I’m thinking of turning down the prestige of Tufts and Georgetown. I’m sorry if I gave you the wrong impression.

As to my parents, if I go to Tufts or Georgetown I’d have to pay for law/grad school myself, which seems fair since I wouldn’t want them paying over half a million dollars on my education.

Follow the money unless you don’t think you’ll fit into the culture at NEU (did you visit, did you like it?). Also, is the end game very likely to be Grad/Law school? If so, then follow the money, if not, then spend your parents money for the top IR programs that Tufts and GT offer - if you are sure about IR and sure about getting a job after undergrad.

@rebecca12345 If you can make the money work, I would strongly recommend Tufts or GU, which have world renowned IR programmes. You will study alongside better students at Tufts/GU and have better job prospects compared to Northeastern.

I would go to GU out of these three for your prospective major.

I heard that Georgetown favors its own students for law:

just something to consider if you want to go to law school

For what you want to go into, Georgetown/Tufts would absolutely be worth the extra money.

Go with Georgetown, especially if you got into the SFS. Tufts is awesome, but this seems like a no-brainer to me. It’s Georgetown for IR. You honestly can’t beat that.

And yeah they definitely favor their own law students. They have an early assurance program in which they basically say alright if you’re a Gtown student with this set GPA (which changes year-to-year) or higher, you can come to Gtown law if you want and don’t worry about applying or taking the LSAT- you’re in.

But yeah, in general, and especially for your field Georgetown beats Tufts and they both are in a different league than NEU.
