I want to study political science or economics in college, and I really want a fun college experience as well. I’ve gotten into UMich and Georgetown, and I have no idea which to pick. Some things to consider:
-They ended up costing about the same due to a scholarship
-I am from D.C. and want to explore a new city, but I don’t like the coldness of Ann Arbor
-I’m concerned about the “club culture” at Georgetown, and the competitiveness as well.
-I do like smaller classes and being able to get to know my professors, and am concerned about getting lost at such a big school like UMich
-I want to tailgate and go to sports games and stuff
-I also want to rush if I go to UMich
-Reputation is not that important to me, but it kinda is to my parents
you’ll need to prioritize a little bit your interests, for instance if a rah rah sports culture is important, than you should attend UM, if smaller classes is important, than Georgetown.
They’re both great schools that would fit your basic academic interests. Think about what is most important to you in terms of school culture, because they are quite different in that sense.
UMich is a big school, and you’ll be in larger classes, but you can still get to know your professors if you make a bigger effort. However Georgetown is more accommodating to those academic interests, and opportunities in general will probably be easier to grab there as there will be much, much less competition.
If rushing, tailgating and sports culture are truly very important to you, and you’re willing to work a bit more for individual attention, then UMich is probably your school.
