I will be starting to apply this summer and I am unsure as to where I should go and how to apply in the sense of early decision vs. regular. Right now, my top two choices are Upenn and Georgetown. Currently, I am thinking of the premed track. Upenn has early decision but if I apply early and get in I won’t be able to apply to Georgetown. If I apply early to Georgetown, they (I visited the campus and this is what the admissions person said) said there wasn’t really any benefit of doing so, but applying early isn’t binding like Upenn. I don’t know which one I would rather go to. I don’t want to apply to Georgetown early and have to apply to Upenn regular admission because obviously it will be harder to be accepted. However, I don’t want to apply to Upenn ED and end up not wanting to go there. To add even more to my indecisiveness (sorry) I’m not entirely sure about premed. I definitely want to go science, though. Upenn has a lot to offer outside of the premed concentration but I don’t really know if I would be able to change my mind if I go to Georgetown because I don’t know if their other programs are good or if they even have a lot of other programs in this area. I really loved Georgetown’s campus and Upenn’s was beautiful as well. It’s just that there is a lot more to do in Georgetown. There are benefits and downfalls to both so if you could offer me any information that you have that could help me in my decision, it would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
IMO you should not apply early unless 1) you have an certain #1 school 2) you have no need to compare financial offers between schools. It sounds to me that if you apply to Penn ED and get in you might feel “trapped” into going. I suggest that you try to re-visit both school early in the fall and see if a favorite emerges – that helped my D feel confident of where to apply ED between her final two schools.
If you’re not sure and/or not sure you can afford it, don’t go ED. Anywhere.
Since the Ivies have good FA, ED is probably alright at Penn if OP runs an NPC, finds that it’s affordable, and does not have unusual financial circumstances (non-custodial parent, parents own a business, etc.). However, it also doesn’t sound like they have a clear favorite.
If at all possible, visit both schools and do an overnight at each. This will give you a chance to talk to students, go to a class or two, check out the neighborhoods and get lots of other questions answered. There’s a decent chance that a clear favorite will emerge.
With so many uncertainties, why apply ED anywhere? The difference between Penn and Georgetown is Penn is ED (binding commitment) and Georgetown is EA (not binding and you do not have to make a decision until May 1). I suggest not applying ED anywhere unless you are 100% certain you know you could see yourself living there for 4 years and are applying to a school based on the program that you want. When you apply ED or EA, your application should represent you in the best light. The decision will be made based on your academic performance through junior year. If there are areas that additional time would benefit you, don’t apply ED or EA. I’m guessing you plan on applying to more than these two schools. Keep looking for schools that offer the program you think you are interested in and others you may be interested in. You want to have many options. Best of luck to you!
