Georgetown vs UVA vs Northwestern?

Assuming all costs are the same, which should I go to if I want to do premed?
I live in DC so georgetown is really close to me and UVA is decently close to me.

Pick whichever one is farthest. In this case, Northwestern.

lol why the farthest one?

okay I see your point, but what if I’m sure I will stay on campus and only visit at most once a month or something? (I’m really looking forward to staying away from my parents for long periods of time lol)

It’s still not the same. Much of the point of traveling is to see the rest of the country. Besides, Northwestern is also the most selective school on that list, isn’t it?

Likeaboss…

What kind of kid are you? I know that you’re looking forward to being away from parents (what college kid isn’t… ) However, are you the type that might want to come home for family celebrations & holidays…birthdays, T-giving, etc?

You say to assume costs will be the same, but when you add in long-distance travel, often that can require some extra bucks…especially if parents will be assisting you with move-in, move out (their travel costs, hotels, car rentals, etc)…or you’ll want your parents to attend things like Parents Weekend. Will the extra travel costs be a financial burden to your family?

Again, I know you said to assume costs are similar…are they? Will your costs be similar? Or, will one require loans or larger loans?

mom2collegekids,
thanks for your feedback. Indeed, all three colleges will have pretty much the same tuition for me (thanks to scholarships, etc). I did not think about the travel costs that much haha, thanks for pointing that out. It might be a burden to travel back and forth from Northwestern a lot, but not for UVA or Georgetown. I guess I would like to be able to visit my parents every so often without much of a hassle. My parents have told me that no matter where I go, they will only come visit me if I want them to (so no surprise visits and I get to control when to see them).
I guess my biggest concern is how easily I can get into medical school and also how fun college will be :stuck_out_tongue:
thanks for your input!

Which is why I support bdm: choose NU.

I would second what m2ck wrote in her 2nd paragraph about the traveling cost. DS came home every break (except the last one) while in college. It did cost a great deal (and his travel time.) We have never gone to the Parent’s Weekend though (It would cost too much, especially for staying at a nearby hotel.)

If the travel cost and time is a concern, choose the one where there is a nearby major airport. The airfare could be cheaper. The worst scenario is: there is no major airport near where your parents live, and also no major airport near your oos school.

bluebayou,
lol I dont think you understood what I meant. I would like to be ABLE to visit them when I want to without much hassle. This does not mean that I would visit them often, in fact I would rarely leave campus

anyways, my biggest concern is the premed programs at each school and how many make it to med school, etc.
thanks

We have a thread for this sort of thing. See generally:

^^yeah, I get that. My suggestion would be a way to cure you of the urge to go home on weekends. (The extra hassle is character-building.). :D

(O’Hare is just a ~120 minute plane ride from DCA, about the same time it takes to drive to Charlottesville.)

All the schools are great for premed, and either will get you where you want to go. Pick the one you like best. NU & UVa have big greek scenes; they also offer big time D1 sports, including football, if that is of interest. UVa has The Lawn. GU has the Jesuit influence, if that is important to you. UVa is a town, NU is suburban, and GU is urban. What do you like better?

Thanks a lot for all the feedback guys
you’ve certainly helped me with my decision-making
ill let you know what I choose when I do haha
