Georgetown vs. UVA

I'd appreciate any and all responses.

I am transferring in as a sophomore.

Cost is of no concern.

Currently I am an economics major and plan on minoring in finance. My interest is in business, perhaps consulting.

I am not a business major because I hope to get an MBA, and I have read that schools favor a liberal arts background. I also like the variety of job prospects that an economics degree offers.

With that said, would an international economics degree from Georgetown's SFS be more valuable in the business/grad school world than an economics degree from either college? IR seems interesting to me though I cannot say whether or not it is what I would want to be involved with. Would this be my future with an int. econ degree?

I have been to both schools and love both campuses. I like the idea of being in a frat but it is not make or break. I will say that I think I would prefer a larger school.

For various reasons I am leaning towards UVA. DC and my uncertainty of the value of an international economics degree keep this a neck and neck race, though.

Again, any information that would help with my decision would really help me out. Thanks!

It’s not clear ~ have you been accepted to both schools? And already accepted to SFS?

Sorry–I have been accepted into the college at Georgetown and UVA.

However, I just spoke with an admissions officer at Georgetown and was told that, as an external transfer admit, I am locked into the school to which I was admitted and cannot do internal transfers.

So what it comes down to is whether or not there are advantages to the economics program at Georgetown or UVA.

Can’t speak to the programs. Have known students at each school. Go with your gut feeling of where you belong. Other responses will probably be more helpful. Good luck.

Definitely go to UVA, no question. UVA’s McIntire is leagues ahead of the mediocre McDonough program at Gtown, not to mention Gtown economics. Unless you think you’ll bomb UVA and can’t get into McIntire, I’d highly suggest UVA.

I got accepted to McDonough as well as UVA (I wrote down my interest as business). Although I’m not going to either, I initially chose Georgetown over UVA. There was a wonderful Gtown alumni reception around May, and I was absolutely astounded by the tight alumni network. I can’t speak for UVA because I have little information on their alumni network, but I assure you that Gtown’s business program is still respected; the alumni, at least, will help you go far if your career goals are finance/business-oriented. If you’re looking at that aspect, consider Gtown!

“mediocre McDonough program” …? lol? I dont think so.

Georgetown was recently ranked top for finance due to their excellent placement rates. Look it up, statistically, Georgetown has the second highest placement rate after Wharton.

Placement is everything. Rankings mean nothing.

Also @ OP, major firms also recruit College kids too. Scroll through to the College Top Employers and see for yourself.

Quick hint: if you’re seeking advice on a Georgetown thread, never take advice from someone with “orange” in their user name. Not many Syracuse types are going to have anything good to say about GU…

my friend’s sister went to georgetown mcdonough and got this amazing finance job before she graduated and will be making more $$ than her upper middle class father in a few years…
they are very similar academically but their environment is TOTALLY different. UVA is rural af and surrounded by a few strip malls and farms. georgetown is a 15 minute walk from a really affluent downtown shopping/eating area, and close enough to Washington DC.
if you want to do business, just for internship opportunities and a more global/liberal environment, go to Georgetown.
if you’re about that southern life, especially greek life, and rural stuff, UVA is still academically very strong. this may sound really subjective about UVA, but when I visited, there was no admission rep from the school and the info session was just 3 sorority girls so i guess thats how they wanted the school to be represented.
