I was accepted to Georgetown in their EA program, and recently accepted to WUSTL (with a full finaid ride). I'm waiting to hear back from Georgetown as far as finaid goes, but I'm beliving it won't be DRASTICALLY different from what my EFC is. Also, I'm planning on majoring in Biology (pre-med)
The Problem:
I believe that WUSTL is a better fit for me. Coming from a small town (island) and not really having been exposed to much of what the "big wide world" has to offer, I'm not sure I could keep up with the people at Georgetown, at least socially. Especially if the sterotype of prepiness rings true.

However.
WUSTL is in, well.... Missouri(!!). That is extremely far away from everyone and everywhere I know. If it was in PA, or VA, or MD, I'd go there in a HEARTBEAT. But it's not. And location is a HUGE factor for me. So, location-wise, Georgetown has it going on. But in almost every other aspect, WUSTL beats it (at least for me)

I know I'm extremely lucky to have two wonderful opportunities to chose from. I just need some help being more objective.

Academically they are pretty much on-par.

ANY feed back, suggestions, comments, WHAT SO EVER, would be greatly appreciated. Maybe I'm missing something? Please let me know.

You should go wherever you will be most happy, so if you think that WUSTL, then it’s hard to argue otherwise.

Having said that, I wouldn’t put too much stock into the notion that just because you come from a small town, that means you won’t be able to “keep up” with people at Georgetown. I knew plenty of people here from smaller, rural areas, and almost all of them were able to find a good group of friends and a comfortable niche. You probably wouldn’t fit in with the Long Island/Westchester aristocracy, but that’s just one small subset that by no means defines campus. Having multiple polo shirts does not a prep make.

Greater St. Louis is the 19th-largest metro area in the US, so it’s not exactly a small town either (greater DC is 7th).

@dzleprechaun- thank you for the response and rankings! I hadn’t realized St. Louis was so high on the list.

@Youdon’tsay- I’m slated to go visit WUSTL April 11-13 for Celebration Weekend and am waiting to hear back about finaid from Georgetown to decide to visit. Basically, if it’s a crappy finaid package then my decision is made FOR me. Hopefully that’s not the case, in which case I’ll visit Georgetown as well, probably the following weekend.

thank you both for responding–regardless of the response

Tashadyo- Congratulations on 2 great choices! But believe in yourself! If you have what it takes to get in EA to Georgetown, you will have what it takes to thrive there. Part of going to college is challenging yourself to go in new directions. Both schools could do that for you- but don’t choose for the wrong reasons.

Georgetown just lost to a double-digit seed for the fourth year in the row. I think you should go to WUSTL so you don’t have to watch your basketball team embarrass themselves every year.

In all seriousness, these schools are definitely on-par academically and great places to be at. Would assume WUSTL has stronger pre-med given the reputation of their medical school, but its not that significant of a difference. I would attend whichever is cheaper.

@kelkym-- thanks! I really appreciate that and it was something I needed to hear-- I am afraid I’ll pick the wrong school for the wrong reason-- hopefully visiting will get it clearer in my mind.

@askjeeves- that’s good advice and probably one of the two factors it’ll boil down to (I’m not talking about the basketball team advice)

@Youdon’tsay- here’s hoping! I should find out no later than monday about the package… keep your fingers crossed for me?!

I’m a freshman at Georgetown (SFS) now and one of my best friends is a freshman at Wash U, so I might be able to help here.

The preppiness is definitely pretty pervasive here, but don’t feel that you wouldn’t be able to “keep up” if you’re not from that background. I’m not (although I am from Long Island so I’ve always known people like that) and it hasn’t hurt me socially or anything. From what I’ve heard, Wash U is less preppy but, as an elite private school, does still have a large contingent of people like that too.

What are you planning on majoring in? If you’re interested in politics, government, econ, or anything like that, I’d definitely recommend Georgetown. We’re probably the best school in the world if you want to study something related to politics and government, with our internship opportunities and all kinds of great programs. I don’t know very many science majors though, and from what I’ve heard Wash U has a stronger science/math program than we do.

I think a large part (perhaps the majority) of your college decision has to come down to where you’d be best off academically and for your future career prospects, so going to the school with the better opportunities within your intended major and potential career is very important. That being said, if you’re currently majoring in “Undecided,” all of the other factors have to come into play as you make your decision.
