Georgetown?

Hi, I'm a junior at a very competitive public high school in MD, ranked 20-something by Newsweek last year. My weighted GPA for 10th and 1st semester junior year is 3.7, overall though (including freshman year) is MUCH lower, I really screwed up.

SAT: M: 650 W: 760 CR: 730
I'll be taking 3 SATIIs I think, just haven't decided on which ones.

Sophmore year schedule
H.I Alg. 2
H. English
AP US Government (4 on the exam)
H. Chemistry
H. Spanish 3
PE, Health, Tech

Junior year:
Precalc
AP English 11
AP Psychology
AP Environmental Science
AP World History
H. Spanish 4
Economics

Next year I'm doing a double-period internship, probably with my congressman or county executive's office, and taking 3 AP's and IB spanish.
I love Spanish, and even though I'm in a low level now I'd like to co-major in it in college or at least minor. I did a 4-week homestay in Spain last summer including 2 weeks of language school, I don't know if that's worth listing though for colleges because I guess it sounds like a vacation.

ECs:
-Gymnastics (rec, I don't compete) a few hours a week since forever
-A ton of theater stuff since 6th grade(4-week sleepaway camps, community+school plays, 2-year audition-only acting conservatory) but I don't like it anymore(!) and so am not doing any acting this year
-President/Founder of a club to support foster and homeless children in DC- 10,11
-Tutor kids at my elementary school
-Member of area Jewish youth institute, various community service projects (60 hours)

Special Stuff:
I am going to be a Page at the House of Representatives for a month this summer, basically a very competitive form of slavery for House members. You need to be nominated by a senior representative in your state, then approved by the Paging Commitee. There are 72 selected from the entire country.
That's about it for special stuff.

Oh right, I want to go to Georgetown because I am a huge politics nerd and want a career in government, in either international relations or government here. I spend my free time at protests on the Mall, volunteering for campaigns, watching CNN, and reading liberal PAC propaganda online. I know it's superhard to get into though, so if anyone has suggestions for easier schools with strong programs in polsci/int. relations that's much appreciated too! I'm interested in Middlebury too, but I think that's even more competitive. Do I have a chance at either? Thanks!

Your SAT score would make Georgetown about a match for you, but if your GPA is much lower than 3.7, as you say, than Georgetown is a big reach. Middlebury is, if anything, even a bigger reach. You'd be unlikely to get into either school.

If you're looking for another school where politics is a big deal, take a look at George Washington U. It's in DC, it's got strong poli sci and international relations programs, it's intern heaven for political junkies, and you should be able to get in.

Yeah. Go for GW and pick American as your safety.

Okay, thanks. Yeah, I realize GPA will be a problem, but I've heard that at some places they overlook freshman year grades? I guess they don't really need to do that at Georgetown given the number of applicants with perfect GPAs as it is.

It is true that freshman GPA is, supposedly, are sometimes glossed over, but your GPA afterwards doesn't seem too great. Also, if I were you, I would take the SAT again because--at least this year--Georgetown does not look at the Writing part of the SAT, so your combined score is a relatively mediocore 1380. Your hook is your work in gov't; nonetheless, I think GT is a reach. Your best chance is to up your SAT score, take rigorous courses and get good grades from now on, do well on the SAT IIs, and keep up the good ECs.
