Georgia Engineering Problems

Is just isn’t listed here, don’t know what’s up with that. Also they have graduated 0 ME students according to this. If it is in the pipeline i wouldn’t worry, but I would check.

The entire Engineering Dept at UGA is relatively new. I imagine that they have been bringing on new Engineering Majors in waves, and would assume they would get all of them ABET certified over time.

OP should contact UGA directly to get answers on the timing of Mech Eng certification.

You don’t have to go to a prestigious university to get a job in mechanical engineering (or anything, really). Southern Polytechnic had some well-respected engineering programs, and Kennesaw State absorbed their programs, so Kennesaw State is a good bet if you want already ABET-accredited programs.

Personally I wouldn’t worry about UGA’s programs not getting ABET accreditation. A school can’t get ABET accreditation until they have a couple classes graduate, but a well-reputed school like UGA will have no problem gaining accreditation for that program. They already have gained ABET in a couple of other fields, so they know the process.

I have Zell Millers (full hope), which is an instate full tuition scholarship.

Valdosta State’s engineering is RETP, and are set up to transfer you to GT. The partnership allows you to transfer to GT after finishing the required classes with a relatively low gpa (3.3+).

What is it that makes your feel GT is not a good fit? You mentioned “location”, but it is a campus, even though some city streets run through it. You will not feel like you are in the mettle of a city, the way you would at , say, Ga State. Is only 20 minutes or so away from KSU/ Southern poly.

I’m very disciplined and driven towards doing well in school. GT has the reputation of being extremely difficult and stressful. I am not the type of person that will be able bust my butt for a class and be happy with a B or a C. I have only made one B in 50+ hours of courses so far. Also I am a small town guy and the big campus in downtown ATL is intimidating.

After reading some of the comments, I am beginning to realize that the prestige of the school doesn’t necessarily matter to me as long as I can get a good job. That being said I feel like my best option seems to be KSU. Given that engineering is on the Marrieta Campus, which is much smaller and hopefully a close knit community. I will plan to tour there soon.

Also it would seem wise to find out more about UGA getting accredited.

It sounds like you are a wise student who knows who you are and what type of environment you would thrive best in.

I would hope you would visit and tour all 3 campuses. UGA is such a huge campus, it really turned by D off to see the huge city buses driving students from class to class. And you are right about the KSU Marietta campus, it might have the small vibe you are looking for. But do visit GT, speak with GT engineering students and gather enough actual facts to make a decision you are comfortable with.

I do think it’s wise to go with your “bent” - i.e., a smaller school it sounds like. But don’t write off GT without visiting. You are extremely blessed to be in-state for GT. One of my in-laws works with many engineers and says that their company has never been disappointed with a GT grad. Especially being in-state, the value of the education that you would receive is extremely high.

Just a thought . . .

Do you know your EFC?
You should of course apply to your instate universities, but if you’re interested in OOS universities, you could also try your luck at some tech universities such as RPI, Rose Hulman, WPI… and see what happens; Are you a boy or a girl (if a girl: add Smith).

My EFC is 8k. And I am male.

As a Georgia Southern Electrical Engineering major all of our Engineering Programs ( Mechanical,Electrical,Civil, and Manufacturing) are ABET Accredited. I don’t know why people tend to try and overlook Southern for engineering when recruiters from Southern Company, Coca Cola, Northrop Grumman, and Norfolk Southern are always on our campus recruiting for internships and jobs. We also have Gulfstream right down the road in Savannah unlike UGA who doesn’t have major companies close to it. Gulfstream hires the majority of our Mechanical Engineers each year.
