I am a rising senior whose first choice is Georgia Tech. I want to major in computer science but writing that as my intended major will be hard to get admission because it is very competitive.
I have decided to go in as a math major.
Would anybody know which major is LESS competitive and LESS harder to get into: Discrete mathematics or Applied mathematics.
@Stephen Bulking Georgia Tech DOES NOT consider major when you apply. Apply for the major that best supports your application! If you have a computer science background, show them that and how your passion related to compsci. Dont apply for something that doesnt interest you. You will spend your time effectively writing essays for something you want than just trying to get in with a different major. ( this is just my opinion btw) Good luck!
If you are offered admission via this pathway, you cannot transfer out to engineering or CS. So you carry that risk applying for Math, if you really want to do CS.
Major is only considered when you area transfer student applicant. This year the Common App asks you to list two areas of study you are interested in so I strongly believe the major you list is not a factor limiting your chances of acceptance. You change your major I believe 2 or 3 times before there are any hassles and I have known students who have changed their major many times. As others have stated, your EC’s and your involvement in them are a bigger factor for admission.
