well, I am applying for Georgia Tech, and I am writing the required essay, the topic is:

Georgia Tech is proud to draw students from around the United States and countries throughout the world. This unique compilation of academic interests, personal backgrounds, and various life experiences creates an exciting and inspiring educational mix. Given your personal background, what would you hope to learn and contribute through becoming part of this sort of campus community?

I wrote most of the essay writing about how I have been excelling in science subjects, but havn't written anything about extra-curricular activities. my question is: What does a college consider as Extra Curricular activities?

I havn't participated in many sports, but I have been doing karate, and got my black belt this summer, does the college take that? or do i need to come up with something else?

For my Early Action essay, the same topic, I hardly talked about school activities, and I focused on what I have that others don’t usually have, specifically a disdain of being with people of the same culture, religion, educational background, etc. A lot of people liked my essay, and it got me in even though I had an SAT of 1870, which is pretty low compared to my friend, who got deferred with a 2060, and similar academic credentials. The problem with focusing on your excellence in sciences is the school you are applying to. Its a Math and Science based program rather than Liberal Arts, therefore most people entering would have the knack for science. This may make you blend in rather than stand out.

Also, if you bring in the black belt, it may show how you are committed to things and go to the end, which is a good quality in a student. Most importantly you will probably stand out.

I wouldn’t make the essay about your classes or your extra-curricular activities unless you’re saying something that the rest of your application won’t show.

Usually there’s another spot on your app for ECs. What they’re looking for when they ask for ECs is usually school clubs, any community service, if you’ve held any jobs, if you take piano lessons, etc. Basically anything that shows dedication or passion to an activity outside of school. If you’ve got your black belt that certainly counts. It shows a level of dedication and commitment to something you care about. Good luck with Georgia tech =)

ok, I understand now. I think I will make my essay based on my achievement (black belt), and also what is different in me. Right now, the major thing I can see different in me is my belief in Ayn Rand philosophy. I mean, I have been following that philosophy for a long time, and I think that is something most people don’t have/do. It is naturally different in me. I think it will help me show how my thoughts are different than others. I will do this, and mention the black belt.

Don’t focus the entire essay on the black belt but make it represent your commitment to things, and always think about if you stand out, in a good way, when you are writing the essay. Good luck! Hopefully, I’ll see you next year.
